??? why is RFK Jr. going to the doctor for a surgery when he could simply eat a variety of weird meats at his injury

Maybe read the link? The 'we' is very obviously in the context of a U.S. specific problem--and a lack of U.S. congressional action.

Screenshot of article which reads: I particularly call on people with the (limited) protections of tenure. We have seen a world where the people with the most power do nothing while people in the most precarious positions put their literal bodies on the line. A corollary in our past is that Harry Keyishianโ€”the lead plaintiff in the SCOTUS case that bears his name and eventually enshrined facultyโ€™s right to academic freedomโ€”was a contingent lecturer at the University at Buffalo who had not yet completed his dissertation when he challenged the state of New Yorkโ€™s loyalty oath. His co-plaintiffs included other lecturers, untenured professors and a staff member. It may seem obvious, but Iโ€™ll be explicit: Faculty with tenure should summon the same level of courage as an all-but-dissertation lecturer or untenured assistant professor to fight against attacks on academic freedom.

The people who push back on silence-as-protection moves are usually the people with the least job security, which remains wild to me. Maybe we should use tenure to do something good?

An hour apart. Perhaps we should stop treating the mindless weathervane spinning in the breeze as if it has a clear strategic direction we can ascertain.

According to @status.news, another senior journalist, reporter Scott Macfarlane, has quit CBS rather than head in the direction Bari Weiss wants to go. A big factor: the network's meek treatment of January 6th. www.status.news/p/scott-macf...

MacFarlane covered the Justice Department.

Procurement, Capacity and Soverignity When your contractors are also your enemy

New, from me: Trump's retribution against Anthropic is over the top. But it should cause Democrats to think about how they will deal with contractors like Musk or Ellison when they return to power.

How Congress can restore the independence of US science Members must go beyond reinstating US government research spending and re-establish decentralized governance at the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.

The most impt change at #NIH and to US science this year is bigger than grant cancellationsโ€” itโ€™s how the agency is governed.

For 75 years NIH has been largely independent of presidential control. Thatโ€™s changed this year. New piece from me and @nataliebaviles.bsky.social in @nature.com

โ€œCongress has not done its job on the legal safeguards,โ€ Senator Slotkin, a Democrat from Michigan, told me. โ€œThere are a number of senators whoโ€™ve taken a look at this but there seems to be no will to move forward because No. 1, people donโ€™t understand A.I., but because, No. 2, weโ€™ve seen the entry of really big political money tied to A.I. The AI isn't the problem--it is just a tool like any other new significant innovation. The problem is the mythologizing of it, and the concentration of tech wealth, which ensures that we won't do the regulation needed for *any* significant tech innovation. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/08/o...

Again, the unifying ๐Ÿงต about Trumpโ€™s foreign policy is not realism or neo-royalism. Itโ€™s the extension of sexual assault/predation/partner abuse to IR. If he thinks youโ€™re his macho pal, heโ€™ll respect you/your sovereignty. If not, heโ€™ll try to violate you & humiliate you. Epstein-ism, if you like.

Dear NEH Grantee,
This letter provides notice that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is terminating your federal grant (Grant Application No. FEL29509824) effective April 3, 2025, in accordance with the termination clause in your Grant Agreement.
Your grant no longer effectuates the agency's needs and priorities and conditions of the Grant
Agreement and is subject to termination due to several reasonable causes, as outlined in 2CFRยง200.340.
For instance, NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President's agenda. The President's February 19, 2025 executive order mandates that the NEH eliminate all non-statutorily required activities and functions. See Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, E.O. 14217 (Feb. 19, 2025). Your grant's immediate termination is necessary to safeguard the interests of the federal government, including its fiscal priorities. Any objections or appeals to this termination will be managed in strict accordance with the President's Executive Orders,

If the progressive strategy moving forward is to just ignore the Black base as irrelevant, we'll all lose. Fair warning.

Get your candidates to these Black events and moments, please. It's not optional. It is required.

There are a lot of posts out there with the close-up visual of Markwayne Mullin on January 6, but this is a better perspective.

Heโ€™s not protecting others; heโ€™s protecting himself and hiding. You can see plenty of people at the entry door, ready to take on the insurrectionists, but not Markwayne.

This woman, US citizen living in Skokie, was detained at Ohare yesterday, taken to Broadview, then transferred to a detention facility in Wisconsin, now released. We know all this not because of DHS, who repeatedly denied that they even had her, but because her phone was pinging in those locations.

There is a legal provision in immigration law that someone married to a US citizen can stay in the US while there visa is pending. Immigration officials have long recognized it to allow residency during the wait time. The DHS has just stopped following this part of the law.

It's the middle of the night in Chicago. Reporters and electeds are trying to figure out why a US citizen was detained by CBP, why her phone was inside an ICE detention center tonight, and where she is now.

Also unclear what happened to the other five people she was detained with at O'Hare airport.

The impacts of Trump's attacks on science can be found in every nook and cranny of the discovery pipeline. This chart from @joshuasweitz.bsky.social shows that even with a funding INCREASE in 2026, LESS SCIENCE is being funded.

That means fewer cures and treatments.
