As for Pokemon, Mewtwo is one of my series mains, haha (and Smash is part of why they became my fav overall Pokemon!)

Hell yeah. We’re in the same boat re: playing most of the roster! I managed to get everyone, including DLC, into Elite status, and that entailed some hours needing to learn the ones I sucked at lol
It could be frustrating but learning nearly 100 characters was so damn edifying, too.

Being rich often entails lacking the ability to read and respond to social cues because you can just “brute force” it. And Nemona does this.

It’s easy to imagine her being inadvertently conditioned by having “the family help” needing to get along w/her by necessity for ex.

And how do you pull that off in her position? Same way she makes friends w/ player protag - forcing it. Being kinda pushy-polite about it. “Fake it ‘til you make it” vibes.

If she treats people like they’re friends hard enough, eventually someone WILL be, right?

Her rich upbringing doesn’t help.

Because while she’s Student Council President and Champion she is also fundamentally socially awkward when we meet her in SV. So is Penny, so is Arven. It’s a whole thing with them. Expressed in different ways.

Nemona’s the one of the trip who can PRETEND to not be lonely, but we know she is.

For my own interpretation with the timeskip, she’s managed to shave off a bit of that “crazy” but we recently saw it emerge during her big battle with Geeta. Fighting will, of course (OF COURSE!) bring out her crazy side.

But when I write flashbacks, try to show a bit of her social awkwardness.

A little “oh this girl has the ‘tism, huh?” way

On the other hand, the Pokemon manga having Nemona continue to be absolutely gaga for Scarlet despite Scarlet being a piece of shit to her over and over breaks my heart and just feels like a writer’s lack of knowing what to do with the dynamic.

(And it’s one I try to address myself in my own take)

As modern times are reminding us, bad people get away with all KINDS of shit, that’s reality. How we depict that in fiction invites that said mirror OP mentioned.

Ex. In Game of Thrones, hella characters get away with shit. That doesn’t mean the story is condoning their actions as morally fine.

LRP I do think that what characters “get away with” in fiction CAN tell you things about what the author(s) think is “morally OK” etc.
But it comes down to the execution, how other characters are treated, what the actual messaging/theming is, etc.

Not every bad choice NEEDS “judgment” handed down.

Art is a mirror, not a courtroom. If art makes you uncomfortable, it is not a moral failing of you or the creator, it is a challenging conversation to have with yourself.
People need to get used to having uncomfortable feelings instead of lashing out at others because of them.

she was such a great concept for a rival, my all-time fav Pokemon character, and she’s become one of my top fav characters in general (though expanding on details from canon and developing headcanon via fanfiction does a lot of heavy lifting!

If Nemona knew the truth about Letty, well... who knows HOW she might react...? 👀

But yeah, def be aware that I have plans (both backstory and present) re: certain key plot things in SV, like the Treasures and Terapagos!

It's also super cute and hilarious and DEPRESSING to see Nemona reacting this way re: trying to keep Scarlet's shenanigans a secret from Geeta.

In OCP's timeline, it's kind of the opposite -- Nemona has been kept in the dark about Letty's past, while Geeta is fully aware of it.

One of the benefits of writing OCP the way I have means that there are vague events that have already happened during/after SV which the reader won't know about, because they have no "canonical" version of how they occurred.

For instance... what exactly happened with the Treasures of Ruin...? 🤔

All right, I'm caught up on the SV manga after months of keeping away.

For OCP readers, while I ABSOLUTELY draw on the manga for inspiration re: Scarlet, remember, my version of Letty has their own backstory and their own... post-SV story, too!
