I had one friend that exclusively used Google+ instead of anything else and it wasn't bad. They also had a Zune at the time, so very anti-establishment.
As someone who's been playing #MagicTheGathering for a while, it's important to note that the original Lorwyn sets were also noteworthy for having too many sets into standard. So really WOTC is just being faithful in their return.
Counter point: What hybrid cards do people want to play in commander these days?
I would also argue that commander is already inherently complex and adding an extra check that moxfield or edhrec makes for players is not going to be a big deal for most.
