Good words of warning here. AI models are generally designed to read and incorporate (and, in a sense, believe) virtually everything they find online, with very few guardrails. The information can get divorced from its original source, context, & rebuttals or retractions. That's a really big problem

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

Amazon Change Means Wishlists Might Expose Your Address Amazon is allowing gift senders to choose items from third-party sellers, which could open recipients up to new privacy risks.

The change is especially concerning to many sex workers, influencers and public figures who use Amazon wishlists to receive gifts from fans and clients.

Labours child killer in chief 'postpones' unethical medical trial that he assured everyone was ethical, organised and conducted by unethical, bigoted and incompetent NHS clinicians due to undefined 'risk', while suggesting the fix is to make it even more unethical, dangerous and useless as research.

somehow it’s just never satisfying when one of the key players who dragged us here, faced with the culmination of their efforts, goes, uh-oh

idk maybe it’s because of all the deaths and the misery

In case anyone was additionally wondering, yes trans women have tried plant estrogens, soy products, wild yam root and all the other "feminising" things available to bypass medical gatekeeping and none of it was very effective. The feminising power of scare mongering bullshit is not worth bothering.

Sharing this because

1) this goes hard and

2) I want to find it again so I can cross stitch 'We should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend' some day and properly credit the source

I’ve see so much of this reaction among corporate feminist types and I swear the idea that women should be present at the tables where they decide to exploit people is so viscerally disgusting to me

Books are not clutter. Clutter is all the other stuff that gets in the way of having more books.

In Buffy S7, there’s a scene where Willow thinks she’s talking to the ghost of Tara, but realizes with dawning horror that she’s talking to a malevolent entity wearing Tara’s face.

Imagine that kind of mental record scratch, but it’s an ad for Squarespace or something.

My hot take about the β€œstudents cannot read whole novels / watch whole films / etc.” is that they can learn to do it. None of us are born with attention spans suited for long media. It is a learned skill and can be developed with practice.

Ah I gather from R4 that govt are announcing a programme today where Microsoft and Google offer training to everyone in the country to use their AI tools, which I'm guessing this research was commissioned to justify. Also, great to be in a govt-backed multi-level marketing plan

So glad this book made it through the Unbound nonsense. Can't wait to crack it open!

what can you do to make future you’s life a little easier or nicer? Your sense of control and efficacy is important in the face of helplessness.

For some reason, it felt like a good time to put out a (free) newsletter on how to look after yourself when things are terrible:

A belief that only through commitment to a sort of misery associated with adulthood (and what they mean is alienation from seeking outcomes that might make life and peace and society worth living with) has been a defeatist project that allowed narcissistic mavericks to look like they have a dream.

Absolutely.

I’m disappointed to see so many MPs who support Trans+ History Week backing a social media ban.

We need to be much more considered in our solution.

And I’d encourage them to read this piece to develop that understanding more.

The reporting on this stuff is always very vague - what’s on the screens (there is a brief mention of this)? What would the child be doing instead? What other environmental factors might improve/impede vocabulary? Why is there a conflation with a social media ban for teenagers in this article?
