Endothelial insulin resistance induced by adrenomedullin mediates obesity-associated diabetes Insulin resistance is a hallmark of obesity-associated type 2 diabetes. Insulin’s actions go beyond metabolic cells and also involve blood vessels, where insulin increases capillary blood flow and del...

The hormone adrenomedullin disrupts insulin signaling in blood vessel cells, contributing to systemic insulin resistance in obesity-associated type 2 diabetes, according to a 2025 Science study in mice. https://scim.ag/3MkFr2r #ScienceMagArchives

Heritability of intrinsic human life span is about 50% when confounding factors are addressed How heritable is human life span? If genetic heritability is high, longevity genes can reveal aging mechanisms and inform medicine and public health. However, current estimates of heritability are low...

An analysis of twin cohort data suggests that human life span is far more heritable than previously believed. The findings in Science show that once deaths from external factors are accounted for, genetics may explain ~50% of how long we live.

"One email at a time, one informational interview after another, I became comfortable, confident, and strategic in building my network of mentors."

One mentor isn’t enough, wrote Erika Moore in this 2021 Working Life essay. https://scim.ag/49hp8fS #NationalMentoringDay

Found this on my windshield a couple of weeks ago when I was at Chapters on Bayer's Lake. The anti-vaxx crowd rehashing a debunked talking point about aluminum preservatives. Because sepsis is a better alternative, apparently.

Inhibition is one of the main confounding factors in eDNA work due to increased risk of false negatives (Type II Error). I found diluting samples does not work well as it over-dilutes the samples. We've been using Recombinant Albumim (RA) as of late. #eDNA

Hello there,

I'm with the Marine Gen Probe Lab at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada and we do a lot of #eDNA detection work in freshwater lakes around the province, especially within the Petite Rivière. My job is processing samples and optimizing methods.

Cheers, everyone. 🐟🧬

When you have three multiplex PCRs to do, each one takes three hours, and your third machine decides to stop working so you spend 3 hours longer than planned on your work.

Note: we have a Main Lab space with our gDNA samples and a Clean Lab space with no gDNA (minus qPCR positives kept under quarantine). The Main Lab is where the contamination risk is.

For a previous experiment we put out several of these devices around our laboratory space to determine if we could gather detectable levels of fish DNA from the air (i.e. is aerial contamination of eDNA samples a risk).

The answer was yes for at least Atlantic Salmon and Atlantic Whitefish.

Okay. Now that THAT'S out of my system, I recently discovered you can still manage to overload a MiSeq v2 flow cell when you load at 6pM (low diversity library). And that's even with a 20% PhiX spike-in.

Time to check the qPCR standards!
