Most humanities research β including the best, most world leading research by people weβve all heard of β is unfunded, by which they mean produced as part of oneβs routine job as a university lecturer, just βnot funded by a big competitive external grantβ.
This would mean the death of research.
Problematic (to put it kindly) on so many levels.
1) there isn't really 'unfunded' research. The REF is there to allocate resources so that research is possible without a grant.
Khameleon Classics is quite a contained series of episodes β just 30 in total. They explore the obsession with Classics, what counts and why, the complicated legacy of colonialism, and how we might use ancient history to fight for a fairer society today.

I for one am tired of Humanities academics pushing their elitist agenda of basic literacy, independent thinking and an elementary knowledge of human history

Next Tuesday, 17th June, 2-5pm (UK), we are excited to hold our online roundtable on Past, Present, and Future Research on the Antigonids. This concludes the fifth year of #AntigonidNetwork activities. An opportunity to reflect but also to look ahead. #AncientBluesky

Cops are shooting impact munitions madly. They're shooting at people who are simply moving along on sidewalks and leaving the area as they were ordered to do. No one in this video is throwing anything at police.
Mounted cops are coming up behind people and hitting them with extra long riot batons.
βYesterday Cardiff University Senate, the body responsible for upholding academic standards, voted to NOT recommend managementβs toxic 'Academic Futures' cuts plan to Cardiff University Council.β
The ball is now in Councilβs court at its meeting next Tuesday, 17th.
So this has become a short thread of archaeologists talking about all the interesting & important aspects of research which are not excavation. In fact excavation has always been only a small aspect of our work.
But my Q to non-archaeologists, 'what would draw you to these stories' is unanswered>

βEven so, demand for humanities majors is on the rise, and with good reason. βAt a conference last year, Robert Goldstein, the chief operating officer of BlackRock, the worldβs biggest money manager, said the firm was adjusting its hiring strategy for recent grads. βWe have more and more conviction that we need people who majored in history, in English, and things that have nothing to do with finance or technology,β Goldstein said. βThis demand for liberal arts degrees is due in part to the rise of artificial intelligence, which drives the need for creative thinking and so-called soft skills.β

A contributor has had to withdraw from something I'm editing, late in the day. I'm looking for a sprightly 10,000 book historical words on the broad theme of 'consumers/consumption' and the period 1450-1650 (not necessarily all of it).
