This is all based on personal experience, specifically with someone I know who always takes the first kind of group selfies.

If you're in the center and make everyone else stand behind you, you need to be the center of attention.

If you're off to the side, you're just a part of the group.

If you're in the corner and cut off most of your face, there are too many people in the picture.

I've spent too much time thinking about where you position yourself when taking a group selfie and what it says about who you are.
