Set operation of a country in the belly of wa(te)r & i understood that wa(te)r / does not wash the red tint off the scalp of a bleeding ocean.

Enjoyed attending a poetry workshop this weekend taught by Strange Horizons Poetry Editor @vanessajae.bsky.social.

Some of the great spec poets we read: Zaynab Iliyasu Bobi, Marcus Whalbring, Massimo Mitolo, @angelaliu.bsky.social and @swantower.bsky.social.

Have I seen similarly inane writing from humans which similarly fails to blow my mind? Yes. Often. The value of editors and curators and critics is the way they/we shoo banal stuff off so you don't have to waste your time on it.

Jesus Christ could NYT have picked a more hackneyed AI sample. A little boy asked an adorable stupid question to his grandpa. Wisely: Sometimes old buildings fall into disuse. And get this: it was a CHURCH. The way of the world sigh sigh sigh.

I will probably eat honey on toast for breakfast tomorrow, and I am so excited about it

I love baroque music, but this critique is dead on

I think if dogs were running a "we rate dogs" it would probably be "we rate peanut butter" and the peanut butters would all correctly be rated 13 of 10

when Nickelodeon bought the building next door and expanded the studio in Burbank, they placed quotes from former creators around the campus.

This one from my all time favorite Nick show The Adventures of Pete and Pete is like the blueprint I strive for in my own writing.

Awesome. Email me at romiesays@gmail.com and I'll connect you with the author.

She's looking for basic audience feedback: what's working for you personally, what isn't, what did you hope would happen but didn't, plus any comps that spring to mind.

Excellent. I think this one is more of a "movie stars" romance and doesn't have a fantasy/magical element (except the magic of cinema). But if that doesn't deter you, drop me a line at romiesays@gmail.com so I can get the MS to you. (And thanks for considering)

Phenomenal and much appreciated! If you email me at romiesays@gmail.com, I'll get you in touch with the author and the manuscript.

WWII Navy vet (signalman; conscientious objector), choir director, opera singer, mental patient (my grandmother was breadwinner; seamstress)

WWII and Korea Army vet (white officer for Black logistics unit), engineer who designed monorails (my grandmother was an art teacher)

I do think publishers are providing less editing and taking fewer risks, and I think authors are inundated with reader feedback that makes it very hard to write from a position other than defensive crouch.

Books should be sized to fit into tactical pouches on cargo shorts, and should themselves have extra tactical pouches to carry other smaller books.

Welp, you've got me playing Opus Magnum again. I'd set it aside a decade ago at the final puzzle of chapter 3. Which you motivated me to solve yesterday.

So far, 2026 has been a string of book disappointments. Is there a book you love which you think I probably haven't read (this covers a *lot* of ground)?

Currently leaning toward Will There Ever Be Another You (Lockwood) or The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (Chakraborty)

Finished reading Ninth House. Thought I was reading noir; got an Agatha Christie ending that undermined all the themes the book had (I guess accidentally?) set up

this is why I don't usually read mysteries; they can cut off their own legs at the last minute

(love 4 Columbo)

low level annoyance with "moiety" but that's more recent and I don't yet know whether it will become a permanent part of my personality

I'm irrationally annoyed by the words palimpsest and petrichor. I don't know what started it. It's only gotten worse over time. I'll close a book, like a knee struck with a doctor's mallet. Have to give myself a pep talk to keep reading. Sometimes I don't resume. Palimpsest is the worse of the two.

Scouting America says transgender kids are still welcome after Pete Hegseth claimed they weren’t "We have transgender people in our program, and we’ll have transgender people in our program going forward,” the group's CEO, Roger Krone, said.

Scouting America wastes no time in pushing back on SecDef Hegseth's claims that it agreed to limit membership based on assigned sex: "We have transgender people in our program, and we’ll have transgender people in our program going forward,” said CEO Roger Krone.

You know that three fingers scene in Inglorious Basterds? I have that same "not from here" insta-reaction when Trump says something about showing your papers.

Soviet. Not born here.

I mean, he was. But gut reaction every time is "imposter."
