Computers canβt grasp the most lucid haiku. Nor can they pen the clumsiest fairytale. Computers cannot read or write literature at all. And they never will. π§ͺ
Shelfie of the books I got over the last two dats at #PBF2025. A mix of poetry and children's books, mostly, plus one on ancient Filipino alphabets/scripts.
Got 14 more bookses over the last 2 days at Philippine Book Festival.
(So 46 books total so far since I landed in Manila on Wed.)

#EDSA39 Power to the people.
Let this day be a reminder of how power can be abused and taken down if people come together and stand against it.
Never forget. #EDSA39

#OnThisDay, 25 Feb 1986, Corazon Aquino is sworn in as President of the Philippines. She is the first women to become President of the country, and to lead a country in southeast Asia.

It was exactly today in 1986 here in the Philippines, when the power of the people had ousted a tyrant in a bloodless revolution.
Even in times when democracy itself is in peril, the spirit of EDSA kept on shining across the world in our fight for real freedom.

Today is the anniversary of the People Power Movement in the Philippines. Through nonviolent mass protest they overthrew Marcos. See this brief history of how they overthrew their fascist government. We need #peoplepower2025!

Yet another NIH government-funded study - critical for advancing life-saving discoveries to fight cancer.
THIS is why we fund science!
The protein #p53, known as the "guardian of the genome," plays a crucial role in preventing #cancer. When it malfunctions, tumors can form. Scientists are developing drugs to restore or mimic p53's function in cancer cells. A #biology researcher explains:

Scary to think that something so common in our diet can promote tumour growth.
The food industry extensively uses high-fructose (HF) corn syrup in the US. This study shows that the liver converts dietary fructose into lipids, which distant tumours use to grow faster. The authors show that an HF diet promotes skin, breast and cervical tumour growth π§ͺ

Blow fly larva's butt, looking like a termite's face. Photo from https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2025.01.007
Blow fly's larva's butt looks like a termite's face.
Termite nests are nutrient-rich and secure spaces that everyone wants to live in (but few actually can). The blow fly larva's looks and chemical profile matches the termites' well enough to integrate into the colony.

Your selflessness is truly admirable.
a, e shows the cumulative value of the methane conversion gap over time, i.e., the sum of the yearly differences between reported methane emissions and emissions computed under the most recent GWP100(GWP20). The trifurcation of the solid lines from year 2021 shows the gap under the fossil and non-fossil GWPs from AR6, as well as their average. b, f shows the cumulative distribution of the methane conversion gap across companies under the most recent GWP100(GWP20). c, g shows the cumulative value of methane emissions as reported and as expected under the most recent GWP100(GWP20) (N = 9375).d, h left y-axis shows the average methane conversion gap across key sectors under the 100-year (20-year) counterfactual. The error bars are standard errors of the mean (N = 8713); low methane emission sectors and the bottom 1% of the gap distribution are excluded from the visualisation and the estimation of the averages. The grey dot-dashed line shows the sample averages across time, whereas the grey shading shows the standard errors. The black dotted line in the right y-axis shows the total gap over the sample, including all sectors, by year.
There are several greenhouse gas (GHG), but we report emissions in CO2 equivalents, because it's simpler and clearer. But that opens an issue for accounting in how you convert those GHGs to CO2, esp. when not everyone is using the same factors. π§ͺ

This tribunal takes place at the same time and place as a meeting of the global mining industry. Mineral extraction has a long history of being brutal to indigenous populations as well as the environment. π§ͺππΏβοΈ #TeamFish
When a judge stops the president from doing something illegal, thatβs not a βthreat to democracy,β thatβs a check on the presidentβs power. That's the whole damn point.

Temperature development in the Eastern Mediterranean region during the past 1,500 years based on palaeoclimate proxies of selected study sites. Proxy series from left to right (with site numbers): 59: Kocain Cave (GΓΆktΓΌrk, 2011), AA38: Jableh (Kaniewski et al., 2011), AA39: Wadi Jarrah (Kaniewski et al., 2012), AA37: Tel Akko (Kaniewski et al., 2013), AA36: Israel coastal reefs (Sisma-Ventura et al., 2014), and AA35: Dead Sea (Litt et al., 2012).
It's easy to forget that climate is not uniform. Take the so-called Medieval Warm Period (which or Medieval Climate Anomaly in newer literature). Western Europe was warmer, but the Middle East and some Mediterranean coastal regions were cooler. πβοΈπ§ͺ

This is figure 4, which gives a comparison of working and non-working children in oral abstract and market maths word problems (study 3).
Children who learn maths working in markets and children who learn maths only from school were both unable to transfer their skills to new contexts, highlighting a need to reconsider how maths is taught in school, according to a paper in Nature. https://go.nature.com/4aXHcuu π§ͺ
