Happy Birthday Robert! Hope you have a good one!
For my contribution to #WomenWritersWeek at @ebertvoices.bsky.social I wrote a look back at the film industry 100 years ago – the arrival of synced sound, the death of Valentino, Gilbert and Garbo, and more – and what we might be able to glean from its storied history.
Need a break? Over at the Globe, I wrote a quiz about famous Oscar firsts and Oscar records. Take it and see how well you do!

Everything about the empire’s attack on Iran was illegal. There was no UN Security Council vote, no congressional approval, no imminent attack from Iran, no evidence of nukes. It’s Iraq all over again.

Awesome! I’m going to see it tomorrow.
This is so cool! Such an interesting examination.
For this week’s Silent Sundays post I look at the production, critical reaction, and legacy of the first adaptation of Emily Brontë’s WUTHERING HEIGHTS, A.V. Bramble’s 1920 adaptation that is now considered lost.
We just got home from a packed screening of Amélie and it’s so easy to forget how nice it is to see, with a bunch of people, something we all had to find.
Cool, thanks!
Great way to start the day. I think the film is a masterpiece!
I have four articles in the paper today, but this is the one of which I'm most proud. BOYZ N THE HOOD turns 35 this year, so I wrote an anniversary tribute.

In honor of this month, I'll be posting an article a day that celebrates us folks. Today, it's an excerpt from my book BLACK CAESARS AND FOXY CLEOPATRAS. I hosted a screening of SUPER FLY in Chicago back in 2024 and my beloved Ebert site ran this excerpt.

Since it is Super Bowl Sunday, for this week’s Silent Sundays piece I wrote about Harold Lloyd’s 1925 film The Freshman, and its ties to 1920s football culture.
This looks fun, I'll have to keep an eye out for it. They also have some cool merch for sale!
I *did* lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars *this* year. I expect to lose a million dollars *next* year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in - sixty years.
