The default (512MB) partition for EFI apparently is inadequate now and the new kernel initrd img couldn't copy over or something. Still sorting it out.
Definitely not me accidentally nuking my laptop because I thought that maybe, after all these years, an in-place OS upgrade would actually work. Kinda back to working. EFI partition is still messed up and I'm missing random applications, but at least I have a desktop again?
