Removing race from kidney function algorithm helped more Black patients access transplants Removing race from the eGFR had a big impact, resulting in 5.3 more kidney transplants per 1000 Black candidates.

“Several years ago, nephrologists attempted a first-of-its-kind effort: remove race from a key clinical algorithm, and attempt to undo the harms… A new study found the change had big results, impacting 27% of Black patients and resulting in 5.3 more transplants per 1000 Black candidates.”

97% of the papers archived the data but only 35% archived the code.

Most people are writing code but not sharing it. Time to bring up this again: scispace.com/pdf/publish-... (and if the code isn't good enough yet, maybe it's too early to publish the paper)

I’m a new principal investigator (PI) with my own laboratory at a prestigious university. The PhD students who make it into our programme have already achieved a lot academically. But, sometimes, that masks their inexperience with the challenges of scientific research, which requires them to be independent decision makers and problem solvers.

From my own graduate work, I know that it’s only when you hit an experimental roadblock that you get to refine your hypothesis and hone your technical skills. But my new graduate students feel like they’ve failed when their first experiments don’t work as planned. It takes a special kind of perseverance to be an independent researcher, and I see this lack of confidence in many of my students.

However, I want to avoid ‘swooping in’ to solve my students’ problems for them. Is there a good recipe for developing the ‘perseverance muscle’ in my PhD students? — A non-helicopter PI

24 April 2024
Dear President O'Connor and Members of the Board,
I write to you formally in relation to Dublin Zoo's recent Mother's Day promotion and the decision to present a drag performance character as the public face of mother's.
Dublin Zoo is operated by the Zoological Society of Ireland, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee.
The Society koMs a position of national cultural trost as the operator of one of Ireland's most vlatied family institutions. Coverance responsibitility for that institution ultihstify rests EDirectors of Ireland under your chetrchthsit, it ango chairmanship.
Since this matter became public, my office has received a significant number of communications from members of the public expressing anger, disupponitment and genuine offence at the Board.
1. What decision-making process within Dublin Zoo or the Zoological Society of Ireland led to the selection of this performer as the public face of a Mother's Day promotion.
2. Whether the Board itself approved or was consulted regarding the promotion.
3. On what basis Dublin Zoo concluded that a drag performance portraying a satirical "mammy" character represents Irish culture in a manner suitable for a national family institution.
4. Whether the Board considered the likelihood that presenting a theatrical parody of motherhood on Mother's Day would cause offence to many mothers and families.
5. Whether the Zoological Society of Ireland accepts that the promotion has caused genuine offence to members of the public.
For that reason, I believe the Board should now address the matter directly and consider whether an apology to those who felt offended by this promotion is warranted.
I therefore request a detailed response from the Board
addressing the matters raised above
.
Yours sincercly,

Ken O'Flynn TD

Public health researchers (like myself) want to take an upstream view of obesity, focusing on environmental factors rather than individual behaviour. In this talk, I argue this is not possible with obesity. Whether we like it or not, obesity just IS an individual and moralised concept.

RFK Jr.’s Junk Science Diet His MAHA ideas about food are built on some of the same lies as his antivax campaign.

Some people who think RFK Jr. is crazy wrong on vaccines (he is!) believe he's some kind of north star on food because he says "eat real food" - which EVERYONE in food has always said.

He's mostly crazy wrong about food, too.

Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..

Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.

This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.

44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.

It's stunning how ignorant the DOGE bros were who were sent into agencies. Justin Fox cannot even articulate in his own words what his "present understanding of DEI" is: he can't even formulate a coherent sentence about it. I wouldn't hire him for basic tech support. #NEH
