I saw this post so a lot yesterday so I started reading Slow Show for the 1st time between the red carpet and the ceremony. Just finished it and it was SO GOOD ❤️❤️ I could see that Crowley wearing this outfit

It might have been filmed while the script was being rewritten and he genuinely just didn't know what they were going to end up with. Avoiding commenting on the very public issue was undoubtedly on his mind too.
It's the theatre. Filmed, sure, but theatre all the same, and people dress up for that
