Snake and pine lily (Lilium catesbaei) from Mark Catesby’s β€˜The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands,’ 1731-1743. I saw this at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

When an ideological pendulum is displaced from its equilibrium position; by violent discriminatory forces; it is subject to an antagonist violent force toward the other extreme.Back & forth perpetually; unless people stop the pendulum in the rational, peaceful, inclusive & fair equilibrium position

During his training at the Arts Academy of DΓΌsseldorf, Albert Bierstadt engaged deeply with the spiritual and sensory tenets of German Romanticism. The movement, both intellectual and aesthetic, emphasized sublime or transcendent experienceβ€”a concept that lent itself well to depicting the American West. In landscapes like Indian Canoe, Bierstadt aimed to convey a sense of the divine through nature. The diminutive figure set amidst the vast sky and towering trees has no individual traits and serves as a stand-in for the awing experience of the sublime.
The sun setting behind a lone Indian may also be read as a signal of the looming decline of Native Americans' traditional way of life.

A classic black-and-white portrait photograph of Susan B. Anthony, the legendary American suffragist, abolitionist, and women's rights pioneer, taken in her later years. She is seated in a formal pose against a plain dark background, wearing a high-necked, long-sleeved black dress with elaborate lace trim and floral-patterned lace collar and cuffs. Her white hair is neatly styled in a low bun with a small decorative comb or ribbon. She gazes to the left of the camera with a calm, resolute, and dignified expressionβ€”her face conveying unwavering determination and quiet strength. The image captures her as a tireless advocate who co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association, fought for decades to secure voting rights for women (culminating in the 19th Amendment after her death), and remains an enduring symbol of perseverance in the struggle for gender equality. The soft lighting and formal composition highlight her as an icon of the suffrage movement.

Active until she died, #OTD in 1906. She never got to vote in her lifetime (well, legally that is).

I never, ever tire of seeing David Hockney’s exquisite work up close & so yesterday’s trip to the Serpentine Gallery was a treat: his year in Brittany paintings morphed into one long, Bayeux-type piece!
This winter-into-spring section will especially resonate today!
Wishing you a super special day!

Free tuition public universities & colleges, is not a socialist idea, it is a national security strategy.
Banks don't like it, but having well educated workers it is also in their best interest.
An educated society is not fooled by TV propaganda, don't vote for ignorant or corrupt politicians
