It was my sincere pleasure to talk to my old friend @philipwblood.bsky.social about my research, the long neglected history of German colonialism, its connections to the Holocaust, the pitfalls of German memor politcis and many other topics.

Bombing doesnβt bring democracy. Troops on the ground canβt impose democracy. Long term occupation doesnβt make democracy. The people have to want to change - a hard lesson from history.
#DΓΌren - an important station with long platforms in German military plans for 1914 - linking up the troop garrisons from Cologne, JΓΌlich and the Eifel region.

Latest Substack post refers to Tuesdayβs forthcoming Q&A - hope you can join us. open.substack.com/pub/philipwb...
The filmβs 1960s dialogue is quite a contrast with todayβs events.
Loads of historical inaccuracy, compensated by great actors and pretty costumes.
Maybe as a puppet but little else.
Do victorious armies in civil war fight to put the defeated leaders back in power? Once the armies began fighting, both sides envisaged the destruction of the other.
βOver Epsteinβ - another oldie moment.
Does monarchy ever relinquish power - does it find other outlets like institutions, hedge funds etc?
Once they took power, the parliamentarians struggled in power. They had no plan and chaos reigned - a very British affair.
No, it was far more complex and confused. It started in civil war, descended into revolution, stirred counter- revolution and ended in restoration.
In my youth I would choose parliament. Today, a plague on both their houses.
I was citing Richard Harris. When I first saw the film, on its opening, people would say this could never happen again. As the evidence unravels over are we still certain of such things not happening?
βThings like revolution donβt happen here.β
Well β¦
Butty politics - red or brown?
Jealous and you know I am!!! π
Have a great day.
