It's a bit more complicated. There were a handful of Americans executed for treason during the Revolution. And the first person executed by federal authority was a Mexican citizen, Hipolito Salazar, during the Mexican-American War. On Salazar, see: www.historynewsnetwork.org/article/trea...
Thank you so much!

Enjoyed appearing on The Legal Edition to discuss treason and current events.
I am delighted to announce that I have signed a contract with Cambridge University Press to publish my new book, βOne Nation Under Law: The Meaning of the Declaration of Independence.β Look for it in 2026, for the 250th anniversary!
Hereβs how a guy who wrote a book on the subject explained treason when we spoke in 2019. The definition is not βmade the president mad for vague reasons.β

Excellent advice for incoming 1Ls.
Alan Dershowitzβs acknowledgments in his 2003 book on the Declaration of Independence, thanking Jeffrey Epstein for his βwarm support and inspired suggestions.β
Looked up the original of Holmes's Path of the Law speech. A bit jarring to compare the end of the speech with the item that immediately follows it.
The entire point of good reporting or good scholarship is to tell us something we didnβt already know and the idea that they could ever be replaced by AI tools that rely on scraping the internet database of what we *do* know is just ludicrous.
It wouldn't be the biggest thing or the thing with the worst consequences, but I'm not sure there would be a purer distillation of the constitutional failure we're experiencing than the confirmation of Emil Bove to a lifetime seat on the federal bench.
@jctate1215.bsky.social presenting a fascinating paper on the Cinque Ports and piracy at the 2025 Selden Society meeting.
If the Supreme Court thinks universal injunctions are unconstitutional, to wait until *now* to say that, in this of all cases, with this of all presidents, is a devastating indictment of both its impartiality and its prudence.
On Treason: A Citizen's Guide to the Law is out today in paperback from Ecco Books! In addition to explanations of the law of treason, it includes tales of various accused traitors in American history. I loved writing this book, and I hope you will enjoy it, too.

RIP to one of the greats.
Utterly appalling.
Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. My book, βThe Trials of Allegiance: Treason, Juries, and the American Revolution,β documents the struggles around the rule of law during this bitterly divisive period. carltonlarson.com/the-trials-o...

Congratulations!
Such a hideous usage. Whatβs wrong with βgiveβ or βgaveβ?
Yeah, I've been wondering this too.
Looking forward to trying out this site!
