PS - as it is, what few university collaborations remain (we've lost one in the last 12 months owing to redundancies) are at risk, for various reasons, so it's moot.

The host institution (IHR) is outside the REF system, partly to allow us to escape the issues the writer describes.

Yes, that's reasonable (and nothing very new - it was a sticking point for @vch-home.bsky.social projects two REFs ago - the research wouldn't get accepted, though the engagement would and measuring it was tricky). But the label remains quite silly.

Only a small and comparatively recent element of UK archaeological research is purely academic. Today, the overwhelming majority is conducted within professional archaeology. Meanwhile UK avocational archaeology has 200+ years of national and regional associations, publications, and collections.

This is incredibly shit but also completely unsurprising. Every single large corporate in the UK is dropping everything useful or sustainable they might have been doing in favour of miraculous snake oil sold by grifters

β€œWe all know it’s fracking, so treat it as such. It’s banned; therefore, it should not be approved" says Councillor Steve Mason.

Fossil fuel firms claim a 'proppant squeeze' is different from fracking & therefore not banned in the UK.

This black-and-white photograph depicts two women walking along a street carrying large wicker baskets. They are dressed in late 19th-century attire, with long skirts and shawls.

The street is lined with terraced houses featuring iron railings, and a gas street lamp is visible in the background.

It's #WomensHistoryMonth πŸŽ‰

As usual, I'll be sharing ordinary women's stories.

I like writing about these women. They didn't do anything the world would deem spectacular.

They were just everyday people going about their lives. Surviving the way they knew best.

Not only are the daffs starting to open in the Necropolis, the bees are out as well.

I know it's wrong so early in the year, but I will take wee brightnesses where I can.

Sagging, deflected, and perilously close to collapse, the roof of St James’s, Llangua was in a dire state before our repair project. Now, thanks to the tireless efforts of Jones & Fraser, the roof has been brought back to a condition much closer to its original medieval form.

So MP @bromsgrovebradley.bsky.social wants to know about the CO2 impact of Chinese clean-tech manufacturing, having just asked a Q in parliament

Which is lucky, cos we published detailed analysis on this last year: China’s clean-energy exports in 2024 alone will cut overseas CO2 by 1% (inc UK)

After a decade as a de facto poop correspondent, it was great to see the sewage scandal brought together in Channel 4’s brilliant drama Dirty Business. Even if you think you know the story, watch it.

I’ve tried to sum up the whole malodorous affair here: watershedinvestigations.com/a-decade-ins...

I once spent 3 days trying to track the origin of a photocopy of drawings of pilgrim badges. I knew they were from Salisbury and in the end I emailed the museum there. They didn't know either but they suggested an alternative source which I used.
