you can sorta think of multiplayer like a sixth character's ascension progression basically, if that helps

multiplayer ascension is character agnostic, so it doesn't care which character you use, and is entirely separated from your single player ascension levels

also you're only allowed to queue with friends using the highest ascension level of whoever has the least multiplayer ascension levels unlocked
