My summer of demolition and renovation: Remodeling our bathroom and learning I had cancer in my face | UAMS Medicine and Meaning Twenty-four years ago Aaron and I purchased the home where we still live. It’s a classic mid-century rambler with three small bedrooms and a full basement.

Happy to share that University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences published my essay, "My summer of demolition and renovation: Remodeling our bathroom and learning I had cancer in my face."

Here's a link to the new issue of 'Medicine and Meaning.'

Tomorrow marks one year since a biopsy revealed I had skin cancer. Two days of surgery and months of recovery followed.
I invite you to read an essay I wrote about the experience.

I learned something new about my grandfather last week. He was born in 1900 and fought in France in WWI. When WWII came around -- with two of his sons fighting in the war -- he volunteered to fight again. (The military didn't take him, he was too old, but he volunteered anyway).

That Sinking Feeling Podcast - Elizabeth Rynecki A podcast about a son's ADHD and a mother's insight's gleaned from her father's ship salvage career.

This podcast about parenting a kid with ADHD is so, so good. Whether you're in a similar situation or not you'll learn something about ADHD -- and ship salvage. It's an unconventional confluence of topics, but it will make sense once you start listening -- I promise! @erynecki.bsky.social

My book has been out for seven years and I am truly honored that book clubs still choose to read and discuss it. Thank you Friends of the Ely Public Library (...if I had known I could have joined via Zoom)! #MarcelsLetters

Expecting to hear "rapid unscheduled disassembly" the next time a client's project goes awry.

...for nearly 2 decades, was arrested as a 'foreigner' and deported. He died inside a cattle car heading east.

Brutal? Yes. Does that action still reverberate seven decades later? Yes. Was he welcomed until a new regime told him he was no longer welcome? Yes.

...warmly welcomed foreign workers, as they needed to replace able-bodied men lost in WWI. Her father loved France, loved Paris. He worked as a locksmith.

Everything changed in 1940, of course.

In November 1942 her father, who, despite having lived in France ...

Let me share a story about deporting once-welcomed workers...

My friend Louise is 99 years old. She has lived in Minnesota since the late 1940s, but was born and raised in Paris. Both her parents had been born in Poland, but moved to Paris in the booming inter-war years. At that time France...

My dad has been gone for 2-1/2 years, and last night, for the first time, he showed up in a dream. We talked through a half-open door for 3 or 4 minutes. In the dream everything was clear as day, but after waking all I could remember is the surprise in my voice when I saw him and said "hi dad!"

I should add the 'WTF?! is happening' was from those of us watching. None of us knew they were trick candles, we watched as the flames on the mass of candles just kept getting bigger!

I brought a cake w/ candles to a friend who is turning 99 next week. Unbeknownst to me, my local Kowalski's sells trick candles that re-light after you blow them out. Picture a 98-year-old lady trying to blow out a cake full of candles that won't go out. Equal parts 'WTF?! is happening' + laughter.
