I’ve been listening to Bibliophobia by Sarah Chihaya the last few days, and I think this is a really important book for former English majors (me) who place a lot of value on their identity as readers or writers (me) but also go through long periods of time where they can’t do those things (me)

We’re so desensitized to gun violence with how often it happens in the US that stories about mass shootings don’t really linger with me the way they should or the way they used to, but this one definitely has me feeling as scared as we should probably feel, uh, all of the time.

(My employer has multiple campuses and it didn’t happen at the campus where my office is or where I go regularly, just now and then for meetings and events, so I wasn’t there, but there’s something about it happening at a place you go that’s really unsettling.)

I don’t want to say too much about it publicly bc I’m not trying to dox myself, but there was an active shooter at my workplace last weekend that injured several and killed one, and this week of aftermath following it has genuinely been one of the hardest of my life.

I’m trying so hard to maintain some level of positivity right now because we have to do what we can to keep going in whatever way we can, but it is hard!

Saw some friends I don’t see that often last week and one of them asked how I was, and in my head I was like, “don’t you do it, don’t you mention the NIH funding cuts, we’re here to have fun”, and then it came out anyway two minutes later

I work in a healthcare nonprofit, and lately I am that scene in mean girls where she’s like “I couldn’t stop talking about Regina George” but instead of Regina George it’s any of the myriad of current assaults on my work
