Although we observed a unitization effect when participants were given information to help bind the word pairs into a single entity, asking them to self-generate that binding did not offer any added benefit beyond the generation effect. 3/
We found a robust generation effect in both younger and older adults: word pairs become more memorable when participants actively generated information during encoding. 2/
