Utah fan here:
Let me tell you something. Kyle Whittingham is a phenomenal human being. A man of integrity and an absolute badass. I would go to war for this man. I am not even upset he is leaving, because I love the guy and am too happy for him to be sad.
I guess if I could sum it up: as soon as NIL changes happened, things changed. Whitt is amazing, but with all of the challenges he already had at Utah, throwing all the NIL stuff on top of it all started to put one too many holes in the ship, so-to-speak. We could no longer make the next jump.
personality to make up the difference when a player has $$$ options to chose from no matter where he goes.
Michigan is great for Kyle because 75+% of the issues that he would have at Utah he no longer has. I'm happy and excited for him.
combat all of these issues. Whitt is fantastic, but the program needs someone/something different to bring in more talent. It's not even a knock on Whitt, it's more circumstantial than anything. We need to be able to pay athletes more to compete AND we need to be attractive enough with a dynamic HC
amazing all things considered, but this also has come with a 2 steps forward, 1 step back scenario (sometimes two steps back). I think Utah is a unique school that needs a new leader (and arguably more) to improve talent acquisition because at the end of the day- it's the biggest difference maker to
Long thread answer (sorry):
I think he was hamstrung by too many factors that hampered his ability to create sustained momentum for the program. He has to reset way too often due to external forces (Jump to Pac12, having a functional OC, transfers, Covid, move to big12, injuries, etc). He's done
You know, it's a little surprising how little my quality of life has changed since the cancer/kidney was removed. I expected more change, and honestly, the worst and only noteable change is that I get light headed more often now for no reason? I don't even know if it's even related lol
I might be in the minority on this (been off bluesky for a bit), but I LOVE this for Coach Whittingham.
I've made it clear that I think Whitt's time at Utah has been over for some time. But I have always loved the man, having personally met him a couple times (he likely doesn't remember, but yeah)
Hi folks. I have been away for a bit because I got a cancer diagnosis out of nowhere ๐ ๐
Long story short: renal cell carcinoma, lost a kidney and removed the cancer 100%. Been a wild few months.
I feel like Kyle does really well when he understands or believes that he is sorely outgunned.
But then again, I feel like he puts the offense on a shorter leash when this happens so it's a double-edged sword ๐ฎโ๐จ
True. Goes back to his first couple of years and "the best QB room in the country" or whatever he said. But I gave him grace for that statement because he's not an offensive coach.
And maybe his statement of being "shocked" is more of a statement for the players to hear and know that he expects more of them than Kyle being truly shocked.
But I don't know, I just think it's such a weird thing to hear from a man who has forgotten more football expertise than I will ever know.
I think Utah teams tend to slightly overvalue their own talent when they play really good teams. Unless it's clear that there's a talent gap, I recall several head-scratchers over the years that show an odd disconnect.
Remember how Utah refused to play any zone against USC's NFL receiving core?
With all due respect:
Coach, you always have great lineman, you of all people should know if they will be challenged any given week. How are you shocked?
Anyone with eyes can see that Tech is really good in the trenches. Utah is good, but isn't the Denver Broncos. No one else was "shocked."
I love Coach Whitt. Love his personality, love what he did for the Utah program. Utah football isn't Utah football without him.
But I'm so convinced that he should have retired a few years ago.
He said he was shocked that Utah lost the LOS to Tech and frankly, I'm shocked that he's shocked.
To answer Jane's posed question, if I have learned anything about life or biology, it's that as intelligence increases, the capacity for cruelty also increases. It's actually right in line with what you'd expect, sadly.
Would it be terrible as a countertop? Maybe. Probably. Would I still do it? ......Yes.
Screw monzonite or gabbro, I want THIS for my countertop.
The people who are saddened by his death would also be saddened by Grand Moff Tarkin's death in Star Wars.
Absolutely, no question. As far as Utah's qualifications, they are solidly on par with the middle of the Big 10 (I'd rank them 10 out 18.) But just being a potential mid to high middle Big 10 program is never going to be good enough to justify them being added to the conference imo.
I was thinking the same thing as I watched the game. I'm hoping Dampier has some early success on the ground so that teams bite on his ability to run and enable someone else to take over the ground game as we move through the season ๐
Not necessarily disagreeing, but how would a team qualify being in the Big 10 in your opinion? I can see reasons why Utah should and shouldn't be.
My fandom when Utah football beats a SoCal school by 4+ touchdowns:
There's a comedian who does a funny bit about this, but I can't remember who. Matteo Lane, maybe?
Seriously. Even if I wanted to check out how hot the cheerleaders are, I could just, you know, focus on the female cheerleaders. No one is forcing them to objectify anyone, male or female.

My profile banner picture is of the San Rafael reef- the white rock is part of the same formation.
If you look at outcrop at the bottom left corner of the picture, you might think it looks like a sand dune. That's because it is- or rather it was 200 million years ago.
