2/ ED staff get so much criticism, so rarely get thanks - a little effort and a few quid made them feel appreciated ☺️🙏🏻.

1/ Today I took some thank-you cards and chocs for the staff at the hospital where my aunt was admitted for emergency surgery last week. I took some into the ED, one of the nurses did a little happy dance ❤️ and said I’d made her day - well, she made mine.

The mythbuster: Do not ignore this second warning of the deadly impact of long A&E waits Steve Black examines the ONS' new analysis linking long A&E waits to rising patient mortality, highlighting the urgent need for NHS action to tackle the crisis of excessive delays and their fatal ...

Long waits in A&E kill patients. Maybe a thousand every month. The recent ONS analysis has issues but makes the problem look worse than previous analyses:

Vaccines work.
Masks work.
Lockdowns are sometimes necessary.
Access to affordable healthcare/medicines is a human right.
Immigrants are generally an asset.
Equality/Diversity/Inclusion policies are a good idea.
Abortion is sometimes needed to save life.
Keep saying these things. Truth is important.

Reimagining Medical School Admissions: Shaping the Future of Healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand

'the selection process for medical school can be seen as akin to selecting rugby players for a team. We have selected the best individual players, but they all happen to be outside backs and loose forwards.'

"Be Kind" is an affirmation to tell one's self.

It should not be used to shield the powerful from the righteous anger of those of us affected by their terrible leadership and awful policies.

Stop telling people to #BeKind.

I'll "Be Kind" when they stop "Being Incompetent".

I’m not convinced it will make any difference with public understanding - most don’t know the difference between a radiologist and a radiographer. There’s no reason why we couldn’t campaign for both anaesthetist and anaesthesiologist to be protected in law.

A nice thread to circulate to non-medical
followers ⬇️ to which I’d add:
1) yes you can take analgesics before coming to ED, and
2) if you’ve injured an upper limb (especially below the elbow) take rings off asap!
3) take a mobile phone power bank to ED
4) wear a facemask!

‘Systematic reviews’ that aim to extract broad conclusions from many studies are in peril Fake papers are “poisoning the well” for these gold-standard syntheses, researchers say

A growing problem --- fake papers polluting systematic reviews. And interesting point that the gold-standard protocols that Cochrane is developing to weed out untrustworthy studies, are too much of an effort for systematic-review authors looking at 100s of papers. www.science.org/content/arti...

If young snipe aren’t called snippets, they should be!

Busy few days here in the #Falklandislands - when you’re the sole anaesthetist/intensivist, it doesn’t take much extra OOH work to add up! Satisfying, though, and pleased with the initial response for our recent assurance visit

Did one of these today for foot surgery on a lovely but very frail patient. Lateral, but partly as she can’t lie on her back. She, the surgeon and the theatre staff were amazed and delighted at how well it worked and how little it hurt doing the block - fave block indeed! ❤️
