The course discusses the different answers that practical philosophy has to offer to the question of what makes a human life good for the one who lives it.
The course thus seeks answers to questions such as: What is happiness, and is happiness the only thing important to living a good life? What role, if any, does morality play in the good life? What role does excellence or success play? By considering philosophical theories about the good life, the course seeks to provide answers to questions such as these. The theories covered during the course are discussed and problematized, among other things by examining the implications they have for our individual life choices and the question of how we should live.
Our popular summer course Happiness and the Good Life is open for applications. The course is fully remote and taught in English. Deadline March 16. Sign up today! www.su.se/utbildning/u... CC: @stockholm-uni.bsky.social

3/6 Mi-am făcut recent timp să-i citesc teza integral.

Mercifully, there have only ever been two species ignoring my emails or replying with archaeological delay: journalists too green to know better, and academics too busy footnoting their own importance. I encounter them only through intermediaries better connected than discerning.

Granting agencies: when you give your most prestigious grants to people whose publication lists are padded with irrelevant—if not outright nonsensical—papers, and fund projects to produce more of them, you're not funding excellence; you are laundering mediocrity through prestige.

@pkrugman.bsky.social raises a vital point.
At $1 billion/day, six weeks of the air war on Iran would cost as much as a year of US military support for Ukraine. Which would do more for US national security?
The answer may be debated, but the question is essential for America.

Prix d’ombre.

Trump just held a press conference about war with Iran, and spent much of it talking about drapes and his ballroom. I guess those are the drapes of wrath???

Communicating uncertainty about our conclusions is an important scientific task.
Is reporting a point estimate and standard error good enough?
We propose a practical recipe for checking whether it is, and for improving our report when it is not. buff.ly/1RmUW1F

Since Air France managed to delay our bag on a DIRECT flight (yeah... WTF?!), had to stay overnight close to Budapest to wait for it. We did so in nearby Cegléd: hello BÉNI Family Wine Farm! Terrific food, wine, farm animals. Our 8yo clearly fell for the super funny dog and the baby racka lambs. 🐶🐑🍷

In honor of Takeshi Amemiya: we've never met, but his "Advanced Econometrics", standard reference for so many, set my bar for clarity and purpose very early on. I've also found inspiration in many of his articles. His rigor, nonpareil attention to detail, and technical prowess live on.

50th Anniversary of Mathematics of Operations Research (and 50 papers, one for each year)
The 1981 paper is Roger Myerson's famous paper on auctions.
My 1982 paper had earlier been rejected by the JPE,with a letter from the editor, George Stigler, saying that the only economics in the paper was in the title.

Restaurant Petri is the rare Östermalm high‑class bargain... right up until you order wine and Stockholm politely pickpockets you by the glass. If it weren’t for the absurd markups on anything vinous, it’d be an absolutely terrific price‑quality find: petrirestaurant.com

Economics has failed on the climate crisis. This complexity scientist has a mind-blowing plan to fix that
Doyne Farmer says a super-simulator of the global economy would accelerate the transition to a green, clean world
$100m for a Google Maps of the global economy so climate policy quits flying blind: Turns out, per Mr. Complexity, the missing lever wasn't political will... it was political silicon.

My two cents: Want better economics? First learn what economics is(n't).

OK, claiming property rights in a new term (I think). I just did a Substack live with Catherine Rampell, in which she suggested that young men may be pivoting from Bitcoin to prediction markets. And it just popped into my head: the Testosterone Trade.
