Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.
A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.
Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.
This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

This is absolutely INSANE! Israel has attacked Israel and Lebanon, unprovoked, but for the EU Hezbollah is the problem. 🤷♂️

Hard agree with this analysis. I think a main contradiction of the Silicon Valley/tech right is a vision of decentralization and extra-territoriality that is in fact backed up by US might and force. The Network State is actually the US 'empire'.

This is, unfortunately, the logical & inevitable endpoint of where Democrats have been for two decades now. Obama, HRC, & Biden already had decided that we can never reverse any GOP tax cuts & <raise> taxes on anyone under $400K in income. 👇 is sadly just the next step in defunding our polity.

After months of wrangling and an epic list of delays, the Commission has finally released its Industrial Accelerator Act.
This could turn into one of the EU’s most consequential industrial policy files in years - and the proposal is honestly not a bad place to start.

Tweet from Finbar Bermingham, March 9th 2026, on Ursula bvon der Leyen speech:
Wow: VDL asks if the global rules-based order is "more a help or hindrance" to Europe
"Whether the system we built – with well-intentioned attempts at consensus & compromise – is more help or a hindrance to our credibility as a geopolitical actor."
Politics isn't Bluesky's thing but Ursula von der Leyen has just given a big foreign policy speech to EU ambassadors condoning the US/Israeli war on Iran, announcing that international law and multilateralism are a hindrance to EU interests and basically recasting the EU as a security project.

11/ This is a far bigger fuel, fertilizer, food crisis for Asia and Europe than it is for the US.
Europe stuck between American, Russian, and Middle East oil is trapped in what my report diagnosed as a "Permanent Suez". It must go green for its autonomy.

Hitting desalination plants is so bad. Not just evil but strategically incomprehensible. Without desalination 75% of the entire population of the Middle East will be refugees. Israel and Kuwait depend on desalination for 90% of their water and other Middle East states aren’t far behind.

I've written an overview of the deindustrialisation discourse in Germany: the elite has been sleepwalking into crisis. The title exaggerates but what I do get at is that two decades of terrible macro policy set up German industry for China trade shock.

Exclusive: the progressive voters abandoning Labour

Labour is losing the voters it used to count on, a new study reveals.
In the aftermath of the Green Party's triumph in the Gorton and Denton by-election, and with local elections in London councils and other major cities coming up, Labour is losing the left progressive voters it could once rely on having
"nowhere else to go".
Now, the biggest study ever of these voters - shared exclusively with the New Statesman - reveals the true risk to Labour's future of leaving them behind.
This work, done by surveying 10,000 voters and a randomised control trial style approach, has found out who the so-called progressive defectors are, why they're deserting Labour, and what impact this could have on Labour's electoral prospects.
Worrying news at the NS podcast, where the lads have discovered millions of younger, mostly educated left/lib people get all upset and offended if you relentlessly insult them, tell them to fuck off and implement policies that they find appalling.

Dot plot chart from the Pew Research Center titled "Women are more likely than men to say pornography is morally unacceptable." The chart shows the percentage of men and women in 22 countries who consider viewing pornography morally unacceptable, based on the Spring 2025 Global Attitudes Survey. In every country shown, women are more likely than men to hold this view. The gender gap ranges from +6 percentage points in Nigeria to +22 points in South Korea and Spain. Countries with the highest overall disapproval rates include Nigeria (82% men, 88% women), Indonesia (81% men, 90% women), and Mexico (53% men, 74% women). Countries with the lowest rates include Japan (13% men, 27% women), Germany (21% men, 36% women), and the Netherlands (20% men, 33% women). The U.S. shows 47% of men and 58% of women viewing pornography as morally wrong (the U.S. used the term "morally wrong" rather than "morally unacceptable"). Only statistically significant differences are shown. This question was not asked in India.
New survey from Pew Research seems to explain a hidden reason that Republicans have been attacking adult entertainment: It's their new women's outreach effort.
After school boards and trans sports have fizzled, they are trying to reach women by bashing porn. www.pewresearch.org/religion/202...

This type of purely aesthetic politics affords an immense opportunity for cloistered policy elites to set the policy agenda. Within empowered (closed door) spaces, they trust that their apparent expertise & experience can overawe a political neophyte who wins on aesthetics, not policy.

We paid an ex-Tory MP to lobby for our fake Chinese firm - and authorities did nothing
Investigation finds no rules were broken. It just goes to show how few rules there are.
Last week, UK lobbying regulator closed investigation into ex Tory MP Ben Howlett
We offered Howlett money to work for a fake Chinese investor. He introduced us to a dozen Labour MPs
Regulator didn't even speak to us. Our system is broken
