Yeah and the main hinderance to mental separation would be generational. My boss from Ghana shared a very similar example recently when we were discussing it from our family’s perspectives vs ours as 1st gen.

It’s not uncommon, but the younger generations of those families have space for it. (At least in my own experience.)

It’s very hard to have conversations like that with older family members that may have experienced work camps, prison, etc. Not certain about that family’s situation, but there isn’t a lot of space for idealogical back and forth when trauma of lived experiences comes into play.
