Abolish landlords! Sounds a bit dramatic right? But this is what we voted for at conference last morn. Let's unpack this >>>
The abolish landlords resolution aims to reduce the private rental share, significantly expand council housing. Council housing should be widely available to all - not just for those in desperate need.
How will it work? Introduce national insurance on rental income, as well as land value tax on property owners. End buy to let mortgages to reduce financial incentives for private landlords. Give councils right to buy when private landlords sell. Transfer housing stock to public ownership. Give tenants the right to buy their homes, with rent paid discounted from the purchase price & government backed funding. Abolition of right to buy to protect council housing stock. Create a state owned housing manufacturer to build quality homes.
Green party logo. We believe that secure, affordable homes are a human right. We would aim to create 150,000 new social homes annually through building & buying private stock. Transition would be a phased approach, managed sustainably. New homes should be built to high energy standards, & older homes retrofitted. New homes should integrate community benefits.
