The 1984 photo shows a road running under the twin archways of a school building, with wide vehicle lanes. The modern photo shows the same route transformed into a busy cycling corridor, with large numbers of people riding bikes through the intersection and under the school arches on marked cycle lanes, while traffic lights manage the junction.

But rail/bus fare increases have been higher than for motoring so to get the traffic flowing, shouldnβt you be thinking about what we should be incentivising people to do more of? Most people do have a choice in the way they travel, but itβs currently cheaper to drive. Transport strategy??

An image of a person crossing a zebra crossing on a street corner. A black taxi and another car are visible on the road. The scene is set in an urban area with brick buildings. This photo is credited to Adam Tranter.
Today (11 March) local authorities have been given new powers to install side road zebra crossings at junctions across Wales.
This new legislation will give pedestrians priority at side streets and help support people to walk and wheel more.β―

People walking, wheeling and cycling in the Liverpool City Region saves the NHS an estimated Β£53.8m a year.
Active travel saves the NHS at least Β£54 million a year just in Liverpool alone.
Other regions especially the north east need to sit up, take note and ramp up their efforts.

'Mini Switzerland' plan for Peak District transport network
The idea would see buses arriving before trains pull into stations to improve connectivity.
Fantastic to see my Mini Switzerland idea covered by the BBC.
It captures so many peopleβs imaginations because itβs both obvious, simple and yet - from where we are today - unspeakably radical.

"School Streets" have become a thing to watch. Even the loudest high-traffic neighbourhood trumpets will mumble "Except outside schools, of course", but this ignores how (1) kids don't live next to their schools and need to get to the School Street safely and (2) kids go to places that aren't school

Iβve been trying to get a link from the Cloud Trail (NCN6) into our local town of Ashby de la Zouch for over 5 yrs now. With luck I may get a footpath for a section in the middle within a couple of years that is on dismantled Cloud railway line. The rest of the route is overgrown or woodland.

I wish we could have cycle paths like this between villages here in the UK. Often only a few miles away but only dangerous roads with no pavements between them. Villages have become islands of social isolation where teenagers canβt be independent and those that donβt drive are trapped.

Labour risks election wipeout unless it improves Britainβs high streets, study finds
Decay of town centres a top issue among voters especially Reform UK supporters and is fuelling resentment against Westminster
Labour keeps talking about saving the high street without naming the real problem. Car dependency. You cannot fix town centres while planning everything around driving. The internet is permanent. Retail only survives where footfall is dense, local, frequent, and cheap to access.

Why do people support or oppose bike lanes? Our research sheds light on public opinion
Research suggests that more consultation about cycle lanes would bring more support for them.
Cycle lanes and LTNs often attract loud opposition, making them seem deeply unpopular. But are they?
Across multiple studies (survey + analysis of 36k UK tweets), we find broad support - especially for well-designed, segregated lanes. Good quality cycle lanes benefit all!

Protected bike lanes FTW:
βSegregated cycle lanes β those physically separated from cars β were popular with both regular cyclists and regular drivers. Painted lanes on the road were far less liked, while the option of having no cycle lanes at all was the least popular with both groups.β

The view along a 2-way grey block paved cycle track with an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing in the foreground with rain gardens on both sides of the cycle track with seating at the end.
Off London's Tottenham Court Road, Bayley Street shows that cities change. Originally a signal controlled junction from a one-way street, contraflow cycling was added and then the junction filtered with a cycle track. Today the cycling is still there, but the area is now a little square.

Itβs a mix to show Britain is not broken. The highly visible things matter most: Level 1: litter, dirty road signs, grass verge parking damage, weeds on local roads/pavements). Level 2: Potholes, traffic routed away from residential streets. Pavement quality. Attractive central community space.

I think a contribution is more politically acceptable. When we had Β£2 bus tickets people did not complain about the cost. At Β£3 they did/are. Itβs not about making everything free. Itβs about making things affordable and fair for all.

Of course we all want everything βfreeβ but we do have a large proportion of wealthy pensioners who have benefited from generous pensions and house price inflation. Surely a small contribution from them especially is fair and a pound is more politically acceptable.
