Birds gather on a bare tree in front of dark clouds

Staying upcountry with family during yesterdayβs ice storm. Hoping the roads are decent for the drive home.

A juvenile bald eagle perches in a tree where s/he has a good view of the river.
Hereβs another neighbourhood visitor, a bald eagle (juvenile, I think). The eagles are local here, but the Carolina wren we saw today is not. With fresh snow on the ground, even the juncos are at our feeders today.

A red cardinal poses on a snowy branch.
This morningβs visitor - or should I say visitors, as the snow dropped in overnight. Hello (early) winter!

Lovely capture. We occasionally see Carolina wrens up here in New Brunswick too - such beautiful birds!
Deep pink snapdragons coated wth snow.
Gay feathers wearing snowy coats.
Fresh snow on flower stalks.

First snow, last of the garden flowers.

A shaft of sun lights up flowers in a vase on a kitchen table.
Iβm happy to report that some of our flowers have survived the recent frost. Enjoying a few now in our kitchen!

Itβs like one of those high noon duels - turning your back on the evil/attractive antagonist and then spinning back around because you just canβt leave it/them alone.
A monarch butterfly taking off from a buddleia flower.
A painted lady butterfly resting in a sunny corner of the garden.
Despite (or because of) the hot & dry summer, our garden has thrived. Besides our resident birds, weβve hosted several different butterflies - quite a fun challenge for me to photograph.
I saw these two chasing each other in the garden today:

Rain drops falling in front of an out-of-focus background. In black-and-white.
Rain drops hitting a table and scattering into tiny droplets. In black-and-white.
We actually got rain on Monday. Sadly, not enough to slow any of the wildfires in our region. More please!
So I decided to photograph a few raindrops - such a rare gift these days.

Itβs been a month since weβve come back from our trip to Scotland, where we explored Glasgow, Dundee & Edinburgh, and visited highlands and islands. Iβm still processing my photos - I will share a few faves here.
First up, Glasgow.

Yeah, me too⦠been hazy a few days now and surely it must be smoke. Maybe just too high up to affect our air quality?

The garden is singing and spring to life, flowering and sending green shoots toward the sun. Here are a couple of current faves.

A clump of forget-me-nots thrives in the midst of a field of horsetail.
Just this: forget-me-nots sharing a patch of sunlight with the horsetails. Nature loves variety.
And also: common plant names are fun! Heading out now to look for Johnny-jump-upsβ¦

How many colours are in one beam of sunlight?

Thanks so much for the repost, Sarah - just wanted to say we are total Beechgrove fans here in Atlantic Canada!
From our garden, a trio of pasque flowers - thought Iβd better snap them before the deer do. Some spring beauties are more ephemeral than others!

Deer are everywhere here. We plant βdeer resistantβ shrubs and perennials - not that the deer can read - and forgo the pleasure of tulips.
Since the birth of 2 white fawns, people here seem more kindly to our gentle illiterate browsers. After all, they are neighbours too.

A classic Bricklin SV-1 in βsafety orangeβ drives on a suburban street.
You know youβre in New Brunswick whenβ¦ Bricklin! And itβs my favourite colour too - I still have my iron-on of the βsafety orangeβ Bricklin that I got when I visited the factory. I always get a little geeky thrill whenever I see these classic cars on the road.

Is there ever change so surprising - and yet impatiently expected - as spring coming, arriving, and here all at once?

Thanks so much!
Your photos are super, no question, but I just wanted to say Iβve never before read such beautifully written, informative and thoughtful (timely!) descriptions - so much more than a caption would βoptimallyβ require. Currently enjoying each story, one photo at a time.
Rain beads on a chair on our front porch.
Oh - what was that rumble? Could it be⦠yes⦠thunder! Definitely heard some deep drumrolls as the band of storms marched through today.
