Lossenges Fried In Lent, 'A Noble Boke of Cookry', England c.1468. I thought this would be a very austere dish, but the sugar makes it a nice snack. Flour, water, sugar, saffron, a pinch of salt, make dough, roll it thin, cut into lozenges, fry in oil. Lovely sweet treat!
