The whole "AI" industry is just based on the hope that they can deskill people fast enough that they'll have to rent back cognitive support systems. Forever.

It's like Uber. Just that they don't try to break existing transportation infrastructures but your brain.

Not only was he handsome, but he was a champion! If you love this guy, you’ll love this series, but you may already know about it… it’s a British series that lasted for one season, but he’s great in it. The whole series is on YouTube. #TheChampions

No! Mashed potato sculpting is for only guilty dads who are about to leave their family and need a really, REALLY good excuse.

Here is the source of a 1936 Ida Lupino photo that is often incorrectly used to illustrate her later career as a director.

P.S. What AI is good at is scraping data, which means it’s good at scraping and compiling secondary sources. Normally, this means propagating mistakes and errors already on the Internet and not going back and researching & comparing primary sources, such as pulling manuscripts and books off shelves!

-if AI could be used essentially as a proofreader and fact-checker & NOT to synthesize & create content, this could be a useful tool. In practice, I never see this happen. Instead, AI is usually used to generate more narrative with no interest in a skeptical gaze, making situation far worse. 2/2

12.03.2026 13:20 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

To shift this conversation a bit, one of the biggest problems I see with primary & mostly secondary sources, is that they can introduce error into the narrative. When one source introduces a mistake that gets passed down and often multiplied by future researchers, false narratives are created 1/2

For Ophuls, the real tragedy of a story is the tragedy of the unexamined heart. Her closed-up world is finally penetrated by James Mason’s character when he’s willing to give up everything to help her, finally her heart is touched by his selfless acts to help even after her series of selfish acts.

It took me two or three viewings to understand that this film is not about a mom protecting her daughter, it’s about a woman protecting her social status & her growing realization that she’s trapped inside the very world & life that she’s worked so hard to achieve. #TheRecklessMoment #FilmNoirClub

Sirk in the Sun The trashy contrivances of Magnificent Obsession give way to brilliant, high-art mise-en-scène in a memorable scene that plays with the theme of lost vision.

β€œIt is a combination of kitsch and craziness and trashiness,” he said…But craziness is very important, and it saves trashy stuff like Magnificent Obsession.” #MagnificentObsession #TCMParty
Here’s a fantastic article on Sirk, and this film in particular www.criterion.com/current/post...

Go for it! Just remember that Douglas Sirk got there first and he’s winking at you thru the whole film. He saw the original β€˜35 version & decided that its problem was that they played the story too straightβ€”it was a preposterous story that needed to BE preposterous.

Just walked by a colleague's classroom after my class finished and he was talking about Elvis, getting blank stares and so he had to ask "Does anyone know who Elvis Presley is?"

It's rough out here on these teaching streets.

Thank you! After watching so many films, almost by necessity I start paying attention to: 1) what kind of hats do people wear & where do they put them when they go inside?
2) On what finger do people put their rings? Pinky rings are the most funβ€” they code for β€œplayer” but are often worn by posers.
