You die and then a bunch of people tell you a new reason Chronos is a threat or reiterate the same reason. USUALLY, your first convo addresses one point, and then everyone else at base discusses the exact same point, at the same cadence, largely with the same opinion
I still like the mechanics, and the art and acting and music are still god-tier, but I’m just listening to great acting and not engaging with the text, which collapses the whole thing bc the evolving dialogue is the whole cushion to roguelike failures in these
Most of the game is just going “oh, so this is this version of that mechanic in the first game” - sure, I opened a tavern again, but I’m unclear why I did other than there was a tavern in the first one - and Mel is just as pleasant and decent as Zag, and I spent a hundred hours with him.
This is likely my hottest take period but everything in the writing is a whiff for me here and I think the culprit is this being the studio’s first sequel. The mechanical read on your status in dialogue isn’t a surprise.
Yeah definitely feels like the essential piece here is “what budget did they start with.” Did Nagoshi Studio sell them on a lower budget than was at all feasible for this kind of project? Did they go way overbudget and almost 50mil is a really big new ask?

yeeeesh, I knew they wouldn't be one of the best on the grid but I really didn't anticipate they would be the bottom of the bunch to start this season
Leon's core gameplay is even basically reused with some clever adaptations from RE4R, so some of his sections are reused environments with a reused gameplay model, but it's wielded and adapted brilliantly and should be celebrated, and how we know we'll probably have another great game in 2-3 years
Great work defining Grace vs Leon's gameplay styles means that having big-ticket environments be reused feels celebratory rather than tiresome backtracking! It's deceptively economical in a way that demands good direction, and that's how you get a new RE out every 2-3 years at a high level of polish
Incredible thread, and this makes it all the more impressive how RE has adapted about as well as anyone can to the modern dev landscape. RE9 is gorgeous and that takes a lot of work and time, but still extremely clever direction and design means RE9 can make a setpiece out of a single hallway...
I have clung to this piece for two years as the only thing making me feel sane amidst this game's reception
