Bluesky post from Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan:

1) E-bikes are a fun and eco-friendly way to get around, but higher-speed riders aren’t always following the rules—and that can put everyone at risk. Since 2023, there have been nearly twice as many e-bike fatalities as regular bike fatalities, even with fewer overall injuries.

Maddening to see such obfuscation from the author of a bill that will criminalize people biking while doing nothing to address unsafe driving.

The cause of the vast majority of deaths while biking or e-biking is drivers in CARS. If the Assemblymember truly cared about safety, she’d regulate cars.

How Zoning Won In 1926, the Supreme Court’s Euclid decision enshrined zoning in US cities. On its 100th anniversary, academics gathered to reflect on the landmark ruling’s mixed legacy.

"Just like some believe all zoning is racist, these property rights defenders say all zoning can be seen as a regulatory taking in violation of the 5th Amendment."

¿Por qué no los dos?

Can't believe we have to do this all over again. First steps first, get it out of Agenda committee.

Too often the City of Berkeley takes action on street safety only after someone has been killed or hurt. Our #visionzero strategy is literally ambulance chasing.

Mayor Mamdani wants to be proactive. Maybe @adenaishii.bsky.social will too. And not just with daylighting, which is already state law.

One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

It's funny IMO that Berkeley, California was one of very first jurisdictions to ban straws/plastic bags -- you know, for the environment --

But soon as we learned the actual leading source of plastic pollution?

China will have built like 10,000 km of high speed rail in the time our most advanced and "progressive" city decides to pedestrianize like 4 blocks of an eroding street. Then we wonder why we're falling behind.

@bart.gov I just updated my cards by logging in to Clipper and now I keep getting charged on my credit card instead of Clipper which has my work account. What am I supposed to do, can I just no longer use my phone?

Does S.F. have the ‘infrastructure’ to support Lurie’s housing plan? Let’s consider Housing opponents love to say we lack “the infrastructure” to accommodate new neighbors our otherwise inclusive communities. What are they talking about?

The “we can’t possibly build more homes because our infrastructure isn’t perfect” argument is ubiquitous in San Francisco housing debates.

It’s effectively saying “sorry, no home for you until all infrastructure is perfect — go live 100 miles away.”

The argument is also factually baseless:

I have some really good news and in keeping with vibes, will share it here, and not there:

A few months ago I noticed how New York City has been positively conquered by bicycles. It's true, and it's amazing. More work to do, but the tides have turned.

The good news: It is happening in Berkeley!!

I was just in Grass Valley, CA and they did this with their main downtown street after the pandemic. As far as I could tell people drive up from Sacramento and further to experience the pedestrianized street. What's stopping council from voting on this?

Close Telegraph to cars immediately!

Berkeley voted years ago to close it by rebuilding the street, but it can be closed to cars immediately with plastic posts and signs

MAJOR NEWS: @GavinNewsom signed SB 79, my bill allowing more housing near public transit — rail, subway, rapid bus.

It’s a huge step for housing in California. It’ll create more homes, strengthen our transit systems & reduce traffic & carbon emissions.

Thank you, Governor!

Newsom's Fateful Choice Why the governor needs to sign SB 79

If @gavinnewsom.bsky.social vetoes SB 79, it will be one of the most consequential acts of his governorship. Basically a disaster for the state, the climate, American democracy, and of course his own political ambitions. publiccomment.blog/p/newsom-s-f...

I don't think @gavinnewsom.bsky.social understands he'll be writing his legacy with how he decides on SB 79. He entered office promising millions of new homes and he's close to leaving without having gotten anywhere near that goal. Signing SB 79 is the one serious step he can take.

Rumor is @governor.ca.gov is getting *tons* of pressure from rich donors to veto SB 79. If he caves, we'd be condemned to a permanent housing crisis — and lose 3-5 electoral votes in 2032.

Call and tell him you have his back. Our democracy is more important than rich people's views! 👇 #SB79
