If your ever in Cathcart, do visit our local creative outlet @weare1of100.bsky.social on Old Castle Road.

It's an absolute gem of a store, and I defy you not to covet their clothes, records, books and other items.

There's always a welcome.

That's a "seperate condenser" he's leaning on - his greatest achievement.

Hunterian Gallery and the library are effectively two different buildings, with the gallery built first.

I will say this though, there was a lot of shouting and acrimonious blaming, but all was resolved before construction.

Some might say that, yes, that the "live load", wasn't originally considered & some might say that it was realised after Glasgow Council building control dept. raised it during the planning approval process & yes , maybe it was frantically redesigned & resubmitted.

But I couldn't possibly comment.

Also evident in west Pollokshields, where the development of those grand four and five high-end apartment tenements of Fotheringay Road and Kirkcaldy Road abruptly stops and what should have been a continuation becomes a subtopian layout of individual bungalows.

So restrained compared to his eccentric Balmoral Crescent (Queens Drive) in Crosshill and Inverclyde Gardens (Broomhill Drive).

Glasgow is currently plagued by this.

Everywhere, eejits are scribbling their half-formed "tags" over our treasures, new & old. Most recent being the new Coat of Arms mural in Mitchell Ln - already defaced, or the recently renovated Glasgow Central bridge restored to its CR colours.

Give it a rest

A carving you see much of, specifically on insurance or banking buildings, is "cornucopia", the horn of plenty;

"... Hercules broke the horn off the river god Achelous during a wrestling match. Nymphs then consecrated the horn & filled it with autumn's finest fruits, making it a symbol of bounty."

I'm not religious, but I had often passed by Gillespie Kidd Coia's Grade 1 listed St Brides chapel in EK & thought it was intriguing.

I did visit last week, unfortunately for a funeral service, but was really impressed by the modernist design & interior.

It is a masterpiece.

Note: pic not mine.

A recurring theme in the war memorials of this era is the display of a wreath - as "Peace" is holding in this example.

Its been a symbol of victory since ancient Greek times (early 20c Olympiads also gave their champions' wreaths).

Here the wreath will represent the spiritual victory over death.

My dad worked for GPO Telephones then BT for over 30 years.

Before large exchanges like this, the GPO installed switching gear in individual tenement flats across Glasgow.

These were still operational up to the 1960s, including one he decommissioned in a 1st floor flat in Millbrae Rd in Langside.

In defence of so many high rises in Glasgow (once there were more per the pop. than any other Western European city) was they were seen as a quick solution to a housing shortage.

1960s building techniques mean they are now expensive to maintain, so down they come like the tenements before them.

I have visited here - and the Greeks consider Evans a vandal with his "treasure hunting" policy rather than archelogical procedures (even for the time) were ignored.

It wasn't always exclusively jewellers - I remember as a bairn visiting the Clyde Model Dockyard there - it's frontage recreated at the Riverside Musuem.
