First pilot study of the Northern Michigan University Energetics Lab on black bears across the Michigan Upper Peninsula! The ultimate project’s goal is to study the unique adaptations, e.g. thermoregulation & body protein sparing, during the hibernation fast & inactivity of the American black bear.

Very cool documentary video - Thanks for sharing! Only one comment on the title: we should stop using sleep-related terms to refer to hibernation & torpor which have nothing to do with sleep processes. This is even highlighted in the documentary itself!

Instead of spending big money to recruit a few dozen academics from outside of Canada, I wish the Liberals invested in the outstanding talent coming out of our PhD programs. Postdocs could be extended (#, duration) for large numbers for the same price. It is top-down, headline seeking politics.

Friends: please consider adding your name to this @ncaaup.bsky.social petition. UNC System administrators want to create a single, searchable repository of all university and college syllabi -- a move that invites political actors to attack the free inquiry on our campuses.

Circulating a petition against a proposal to force UNC system faculty to share their syllabi publicly, a move that would potentially exposing faculty to bad faith actors without necessarily improving student access to syllabi (which are already accessible in the course catalog) #AcademicFreedom

Green Card Interviews End in Handcuffs for Spouses of U.S. Citizens

I need everybody to read this and understand what’s going on. These are spouses of US citizens in the country legally. They have entry clearance and green cards, they’ve passed background checks and have no criminal records. ICE is taking them anyway.

What happens to ecosystems when you restore iconic top predators? It's more complicated than you might think. A new study analyzes findings from more than 170 papers to clarify what we know so far about the ecological impacts of large carnivore recovery in North America and what mysteries still remain.

Restoring #TopPredators 🐺 to #NorthAmerican #ecosystems does it help rebalance? Apparently the situation is more complicated… 🌍
