whispers dissolved in a haloed tide --- Jimin will never know what Jeongguk was trying to say. He’d barely been able to shoot forward to catch Jeongguk when his eyes rolled shut and his body went limp. Carrying Jeongguk back to their borders had been the longest swim of his entire life and he’s sure that he left a trail of heliodors in his wake, which he’s never done. Every mer’s crystal is precious to them, and Jimin is especially careful about where he cries. Still, he hasn’t gone out to check or recover his crystals because he’s been here, at Jeongguk’s side, every day since then. It has been eight long months. The healers, both his and Jeongguk’s parents, even the pod leader, have given up on trying to get him to leave. They know he’ll never move from Jeongguk’s side, not until he’s woken up again. Jeongguk lies deathly still in the sand, the midnight blue, turquoise, and teal of his hair, scales, and markings all faded into ashy hues. Jimin misses their vibrancy. “Come back to me, my anchor,” Jimin whispers frequently while he holds Jeongguk’s hand, brushes out his rotting scales, and runs his fingers through his lover’s hair.
