Saw this on the street. Thought it pretty much summed things up right now.

Can old people apply?
Does anyone know what happened with the #NEH Public Scholars program for 2025-26? Notification letters were supposed to be sent out April 15, but it seems like that never happened. Was that entire round of applications simply scrubbed without any explanation whatsoever?
For all those who’ve started to write a book but never finished, rest assured that it is a time honored tradition. Here’s a medieval manuscript on hand-to-hand combat that was illustrated, but never written. Musée de Cluny, Paris.
The AHA has released a statement in support of the Smithsonian Institution, the target of the recent EO, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” This order “egregiously misrepresents the work of the Smithsonian Institution” and “completely misconstrues the nature of historical work.” 🗃️
An excellent discussion of Yan Slobodkin’s important book on famine in the French Empire.

It’s a really good round table. Worth the read!
I just finished „In the Forest of No Joy“. Being no expert on the Congo or French colonial history, I was impressed by this piece of scholarship which truly makes for grim reading with more than 20,000 forced African laborers dying during the construction of the Congo-Océan railway.1/
Buttigieg’s response to Trump vis Twitter, on multiple levels:
Growing up in Germany, Katharina Matro “was confronted with my country’s history without mercy. It’s made me a more informed citizen, a more politically aware citizen, a more critical thinker.” 🗃️

It was on IG, too. A great read.
What we need to be sorry about is that there are millions of Americans who do believe him. Sorry, and deeply concerned.
Twas a riddle. With ceramics!
With so many things in the world to comment on, I’m just going to post a photo of some pots I recently made. These are currently my only angles.
No takers!
Later this spring, I am teaching a course on the history of modern Paris. I'd like to do something on the arcades, and use some of Benjamin's work on the subject, but don't even know where to begin in terms of choosing portions to assign.
Anyone out there have experiences they could share? Thanks!
I’m so sorry. Stay strong and let me know if I can help. Though it seems this is beyond all help.
Check out this interesting mini-documentary abt the Western Society of French History created by Naomi Andrews, Leslie Tuttle & Sarah Miles! A great way to visualize shifts -- geographical, disciplinary, demographics -- in French history over the last few decades! www.wsfh.org/mission-char...
Decorative, mainly. Could work as a bottle for… something.
Thanks!
I know I’m supposed to post something scholarly or newsworthy or profound. But instead I’m posting a picture of something I recently made in the pottery.
