I'm also waiting eagerly for a pile of new books (fiction and non fiction) to arrive.

TLDR: libraries are amazing. Use them!

Off to the library to borrow some out-of-print CD boxsets, like a complete 90s throwback

(I'm not going to copy them onto cassette tape, but importantly - technically - I could...)

Got tickets for Alison Moyet (playing songs from Yazoo and more). Wow, those are going fast!

Reaching net zero by 2050 β€˜cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’ Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits

"Achieving the UK’s net zero target by 2050 will cost less than a single oil shock and bring health and economic benefits while insulating the country against future costs, the government’s climate advisers have forecast."

It’s remarkably compact. But I’m way too far down the line of collecting the special editions to stop now. (Also no way I could wait for the standard to come round)

@cybermatt.bsky.social and I discuss Matthew Jacobs's return to #DoctorWho in Puccini and the Doctor.

And the writer himself drops by to discuss the writing process.

This audiobook occasionally makes use of a tape recording of him performing extracts from Lanark. I’m not sure how much of the text he ever recorded, but I’m hoping he’s there for the β€˜author insert’ sections in the closing book. It would be wonderfully apt.

Indeed, yes! I saw him read a few times (and even sat across from him at award ceremony once). It’s a very distinct voice and one from a particular time…

Also, Cumming was a *superb* choice for this, because his range and choice of perjink Scottish accents is spot on.

Near a tree in The Shire there’s a house in the ground

Where an old man named Gandalf comes around and around

And his mind is a beacon in the veil of the night

For a strange kind of fashion he is Grey then he is White

One of the interesting effects of listening to Alan Cumming’s (excellent) audiobook of β€˜Lanark’ is I’ve become aware how Ivor Cutler-ish some of Gray’s phrasing can be, especially when he’s discussing the absurdity of Lives in a Scotch Sitting Room (as it were) in the middle sections of the novel

I really did.
Which is a shame, because I enjoyed art, even though I wasn’t much good at it

Indeed, yes. That would be an easy way to fix the problem.

I don’t know if you’re aware, but the later Buffy seasons were 16:9 in the uk on dvd and broadcast, while I understand they stuck with 4:3 in the US? I don’t remember many/any problems with them…

He had nicknames for everyone, but it was mostly me that got a song?!?

I watched last year, when I was doing a Davison run through. Stopped part way into s21 when the set got announced - will be good to watch them in top quality!

I had an art teacher that used to sing it at me repeatedly because of my surname(!) and despite the fact I didn’t know the song.

Yeah, I know. In retrospect it’s utterly crazy the things teachers thought appropriate in the 90s…

I’d love Buffy and Angel to get a BluRay release too. Streamed the HD versions and - even though there’s the occasional framing error - they’re such an upgrade over my old DVDs

We watched Voyager beforehand (only my second time through most of those). Hopefully DS9 next (which I really don’t know at all)

It seems crazy to me now that they used to sell these as Β£10 for two episodes on VHS. That was just way beyond what I could afford to collect in my teens/20s

Just got the s20 replacement discs through the post, in the form of an s20 standard edition. Absolutely can’t fault that as customer service. Very happy with that!

We’ve been watching through the BluRay HD masters of TNG. (There’s a fair few episodes in the later seasons that are totally new to me). Anyway, when we watch the old β€˜making of’s they use the old SD clips to illustrate. It’s a complete shock to see how fuzzy and beige it all looks again

Excellent - now it'd be good to see government limiting the profits allowable to old folks' homes.

Our elderly former neighbour is paying Β£9000 a month to stay in one and watching his life savings and the house he lived in for 60 years all disappear into the rapacious care home owner's pockets
