A UMass study that looked at what happened to hundreds of striped bass after they were caught is being cited by the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources in an article on catch-and-release fishing best practices. https://bit.ly/4b1Mo28

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.
I like to think of AI as an extension of what we can do. You have to have the foundational knowledge to use it effectively and once you do you can leverage you abilities in greater volume. With that said it is often used incorrectly.
Anyone whoβs recently looked at raw survey data also knows that the auto-fill predictive sentence keyboards are also extremely harmful to response collection to the point where I steer away from open responses as much as possible.
For those who took my freshwater fisheries survey big things coming stay tuned!
Submitted my second dissertation chapter for publication, hereβs to a hopeful and speedy decision process.

Alex Jeffrey Pretti was an ICU nurse at a VA hospital. His life, through his profession, was dedicated to serving his community and our country.
As so many have now seen on video, his final act before he was killed by federal agents was doing everything in his power to protect his community.
Do you appreciate @nws.noaa.gov's posts on Bluesky?
Did you know that this account is a pilot program that may or may not be continued and even expanded to NWS field offices?

This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024β25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

Hey science colleagues! I am once again posting about my survey, if you or someone you know has freshwater fished in the last year within the US or Canada Iβd love to hear about the threats that impact you/them! bit.ly/40DFOcx
I'm excited to share my first scientific publication, which grew out of my daily coping strategy starting in April 2020 of watching (and moderating) @coralcitycamera.bsky.social

It is surprisingly very difficult to get gluten free food at an airport.
Have you freshwater fished within the US or Canada within the last year? If so please consider taking my survey and sending it to family and friends that also have!

My name is Josh Turek. I'm a two-time Paralympic gold medalist. I'm a proud State Legislator from Council Bluffs who represents the reddest seat held by a Democrat in Iowa.
And I'm the guy who's going to beat Joni Ernst. Repost this, give us a follow, and letβs win together.
Anyone over the age of 18 who has freshwater fished within the last year is eligible to take this!
Check the comments to follow all kinds of actual scientists studying amazing things. #science
Welcome, new and current followers. I have a survey out right now that implements the first-of-its-kind scalable Fuzzy Cognitive Modeling framework about freshwater fisheries threats. Please consider taking it and sharing it within your network and family/friends! bit.ly/40DFOcx
This is a great thread showcasing some of the talented scientists on Bluesky
Hi Iβm Evan, a PhD student @UMass Amherst who studies complex social ecological issues using innovative and novel social science techniques. My dissertation focuses on human wildlife conflicts such as depredation in marine systems and how anglers perceive threats in freshwater systems.
Having read the replies to most of these posts and, as a social scientist, the fact that these replies are about the posts themselves with scientists chiming in, reinforces the message of the paper that this app is in a better place now than Twitter, because of conversations like this.
Others can speak more to this but Iβve been on a couple guided trips for striped bass the last couple years and the guides have said theyβve seen more sand tigers and know where they like to hang out.
Updated freshwater fisheries threats survey response data! If anyone knows anyone who would like to help distribute my survey please let me know, I have a media kit that makes it very easy. We are looking for 200 responses per state and province.

That does fit within my surveys scope. Would you be willing to put me in touch? My email is eprasky@umass.edu
@dogfishwalker.bsky.social do you happen to have any freshwater fisheries contacts? I launched a freshwater fisheries threats survey for the US and Canada and want a larger response from Canada.
How so?
