Even when I commuted into the centre of Leeds I always drove, although I've had a company car and a parking space for most of my working life.
I haven't been on one in the UK since I left school, pretty much the same with trains.

Once you strip out the care budgets and wages, the % amount of overall income for everything else is very small.
They've had so much taken away by successive govts that they're all almost bankrupt.
Adult services and childrens services.
My mum's care (several years ago) was £25k pa but that allowed her to have the dignity of staying in her own home with carers 4 times a day.
I think around 75% to 80% of income goes on those things.
Stick it in the slow cooker or pressure cooker - either way no faffing just long time or hardly any time cooking (no stirring required).
