Jane Goodall, the gentle disrupter whose research on chimpanzees redefined what it meant to be human
Without formal scientific training, Goodall upended the study of animal behavior. She also inspired countless people to protect nature.
"Goodall noted that the most successful chimp leaders were gentle, caring and familial. Males that tried to rule by asserting their dominance through violence, tyranny and threat did not last." An extraordinary scientist and human.
RIP Jane Goodall

Historically, white sharks sat at the top of the food web, keeping Cape fur seals and sevengill sharks in check.
Now that white sharks have disappeared…
Seals & sevengills have increased in abundance.
Small schooling fish & benthic sharks are declining.

an illustration drawn by madison for a sturgeon meta review detailing the impacts of climate warming on north american sturgeon species. there is a map of north america colored by temperature and the 8 sturgeon species are drawn around the outside of the map
for #sturgeonsaturday i want to highlight the crucial research done by many scientists across north america in conserving & saving 8 sturgeon species 🧪🌎👩🏻🔬🌐🦑🐠
right now, conservation science is an act of resistance, and we must fight to continue to save our animals that cannot save themselves 1/

Figure 2. Measuring changes in insect biodiversity (centre column 'Metrics' and 'Trends') can be achieved by focusing on drivers that directly or indirectly impact insect biodiversity metrics and trends (left column 'Drivers of Change'). Where data on insect populations specifically are unavailable, data from other species and ecological processes can provide inferential support for changes in insect biodiversity (right column 'Indicators of Change').
*New paper* Denialism campaigns are growing in attempts to discredit science, scientists, and the scientific process generally. Biodiversity loss denial is a new phenomenon that needs our attention.

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent anomalies in red shading compared to each year from 1979 to 2024 using shades of purple to white for each line. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. 2025 is currently a record low. There is substantial interannual and daily variability. There is also a long-term decreasing trend.
The magnitude of the current size of the #Arctic sea ice extent anomaly is unheard of in the satellite-era record for the deep winter season months.
