For February 5th, I'd like to remember Dr. J. Robert Gladden the 1st black Orthopedic surgeon. He was remembered for being an incredible mentor and has the Gladden society named after him. This society promotes diversity and excellence in the field of Orthopedic Surgery.

For February 4th, I'd like to remember the first black neurosurgeon in the US. Dr. Clarence Sumner Greene graduated from Howard School of Medicine in 1936 and trained at the Montreal Neurological Institute from 1947-49, becoming the first black board certified neurosurgeon in 1953.

For the second day of black history month let's remember Daniel Hale Williams III (1858-1931). Dr. Williams was the first black physician to perform the first open heart surgery and was the first black physician to be admitted into the American College of Surgeons

This year for Black history month I'm going to try to post everyday about a famous black physician. Today's physician is Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler. She's the first woman to earn a medical degree in the US from the New England Female Medical College in 1864.
