I've sadly lost quite a few subscribers since moving my newsletter from Substack, so I would greatly appreciate it if you signed up now that it's on Ghost.
Through her poetry, Joséphine Bacon carries the voices of her elders and the stories of the land.
She joins Kim Sullivan to talk all about it on this week's new episode of Face to Face.
It's one of those books that's definitely hit or miss. With me it missed widely, unfortunately 😔
(I read it last year as an early galley copy. I don't know how much was changed between that and the final book, but it definitely felt undercooked and tedious in a way I was not expecting for a short read.)
I have a feeling people are going to be mad at me at my thoughts on Alexis Henderson's YA book because I did not like it. I did not like it at all. (Working on that review among several tonight.)
I don't think there's enough character space for me to type out my thoughts, so I'll just go with "Goodness." 😥
We've reached the point where you actually have to opt OUT of an author impersonation feature.
Let me tell you the weekslong process my company just went through just to be able to send marketing texts to people. But monetizing a product you're pitching as author coaching? Ok!
So this was a read that pleasantly surprised me; so much that I'm definitely planning on picking up the sequel to read some time this year. One of a novella duology I believe, and just the right length, albeit a few minor quibbles on character age/voice.

Done with day job. Grabbing dinner first, then working on a review and reading backlog today.
Spoiler: Corporation hopes to keep exploiting writers until writers forget they're being exploited.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has commuted the death sentence of Charles “Sonny” Burton to life imprisonment
The 75-year-old was set to be executed even though he was not the person who shot and killed the victim

This is so heartbreaking, and also I am going to make my PSA again.
Babies can be vaccinated against measles as young as six months, it’s just not standard. It’s usually only recommended for international travel in the US. But guess what? We’re the plague pit now.
TODAY IS THE DAY, consider getting your copy!
Look, I've lived in the Southern U.S. my whole life and am used to hearing things pronounced certain ways depending on the region one's from. (And I don't judge.)
But I ended up doing a double take when I heard Kennedy pronounce "Bluesky" in that way.
KENNEDY: You said, 'Republicans think can troll their way to ethnic cleansing.' Did I read that correctly?
BIER: DHS tweeted for 100m deportations. That would be ethnic cleansing!
K: You don't think it's hyperbolic?
B: I think advocating 100m deportations is ethnic cleansing. Yes. Your time is up
Bookday! It's my bookday!
Out today is BUTTERFLY EFFECTS, the fifteenth (15! How did that happen?) adventure in the InCryptid series, and the third book narrated by Sarah Zellaby. Sarah's adopted, which is relevant only because she's not human. She's still family. Biology is irrelevant.
I'm avoiding the trailers but I have Project Hail Mary on my list to finish and review this year (2026) for the book.
Okay, but what if you're a visitor? There are some people (hi. hello.) that always love visiting a library when it crosses my path. Suddenly, I'm not welcome? That makes me feel a certain way. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P3B...
You know the best way to kill AI? Don't use it. Don't buy it. Don't share it. Don't give the people who use it your labour or your money.
Trump has now conducted 42 boat strikes, killing nearly 160 people.
Remember: no judge or jury has found these boats were trafficking drugs. We're simply taking Trump's word for it.
He’s unilaterally acting as judge, jury, and executioner.
This is a danger to us all.
Massachusetts folks: call or email your state rep and urge them to vote YES on H.3594. It's passed in the Senate--let's get this done.

Some were asking me "Rose, are you watching the Oscars this weekend?"
Sinners is nominated for a lot of awards, of course I'm watching. (And I hope they don't treat them like they did Moonlight or else I'll be ready to fight.)
Diane Warren wants an Oscar for Best Original Song. Her ceaseless thirst would be easier to embrace if the past decade of nominated songs weren't all drivel.
I wrote about the relentless Warren Oscar hunt for @pastemagazine.bsky.social.
