NYS scientists sent a letter to Kathy Hochul @governor.ny.gov making the case for NOT gutting our state climate law (via fiddling with greenhouse gas accounting to make methane look less malevolent than it is),which is her current plan.
Proud to be a signatory.

Reaching net zero by 2050 โcheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisisโ
Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits
Our dependency on fossil fuels makes us vulnerable. Wars across the world are pushing up prices for households in the UK.
Why keep waiting for the next crisis? We need to transition to clean power as fast as we can to protect people and our economy.

Thereโs something in the air in South Portland, Maine (and itโs not good) - The Boston Globe
Residents of South Portland, Maine, are concerned about high levels of benzene, a carcinogen, measured near petroleum storage tanks in close proximity to their homes.
One more reason to phase out fossil fuels. Benzene.
"Now the first answers are in, thanks to a year of emissions monitoring along the fence lines of the cityโs tank farms. At two of those locations, the results showed levels of benzene โ a known carcinogen โ well above the stateโs limit."

AI data centre to match carbon footprint of BA flights
Planning documents for a ยฃ10 billion project in Lincolnshire reveal its annual emissions will reach one million tonnes of carbon dioxide

The Elsham Tech Parkโs emissions would be similar to a year of British Airways short-haul flights within the UK and to European destinations
A single AI data centre would generate annual carbon emissions on a par with a year of British Airways short-haul flights, figures show.
Planning documents show that Elsham Tech Park project on a former RAF base near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, would emit about a million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
That would put the scheme, billed as helping companies to โimprove the way they use artificial intelligenceโ, on a level with BA flights within the UK and from Britain to Europe.
It would also be similar to a major cement works in Derbyshire and a gas-fired power station in Bedfordshire. The UK emits about 364 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. The figures were published by North Lincolnshire council.
A surge in plans for data centres has led MPs to call for a national conversation about their environmental impact.
The Times revealed that about 140 data centres have asked regulators for a connection to the national electricity grid. If all were built, they would require more electricity capacity (50 gigawatts) than Britainโs peak demand on a February day (45GW).
The new 1GW data centre in Lincolnshire, where developers hope construction will start next year, would reach peak annual emissions of 1,004,478 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2033. The emissions are those from the electricity needed to operate the facility.

The project is on a former RAF โฆ
Another fossil-fuelled data centre emissions estimate (via @adamvaughan.bsky.social) -> UK project will see 1 MTCO2-e, about the same as all British Airways flights in the country

"A tidal wave of hostile messaging:" The billions spent each year by fossil fuel industry demonising renewables
Head of energy policy in world's fourth biggest economy says scale and pace of energy transition is unprecedented, but the fossil fuel industry is fighting back.
"In the United States, the fossil fuel industry budget for Communications and Public Affairs is $4 billion a year. The entire renewable energy industry is $150 million... and so we have a lot of work just to get the message out about the basic facts."

Teslaโs climate work quickly undone by noisy, dirty xAI methane gas turbines
According to xAIโs own permit application, its data centers, powered by methane gas turbines, could emit more than 6 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.
Last year we went to Memphis to provide the evidence that the gas turbines being used by xAI were not some of the cleanest in the world as were being claimed. Good to see this headline getting it right referring to "dirty xAI methane gas turbines."
And yes, they are very very loud.

New Data Shows Super-Emitter Oil and Gas Pollution across the Appalachian Basin, Unknowingly Impacting Communities - Gas Leaks
A new report found nearly 100 oil and gas emission events in the Appalachian Basin, which exposed nearby communities to harmful carcinogens.
The Appalachian region is typically held up as the gold standard for US methane emissions for gas production. New report from @earthworks.bsky.social and @gasleaksproject.bsky.social shows reality.

Live Updates: Oil Price Surge Rattles Markets; Iranโs Choice of Leader Signals Defiance
A SHORT PERSONAL RANT:
I was born in the Eisenhower administration. I grew up in a rural Midwest town with a shitty school system. And yet Iโve been able to locate the Strait of Hormuz on a map since age 14.
Why? Because energy is defined by OIL then and now. ๐งต

table showing methane emissions for unconventional (fracked oil and gas) significantly higher than conventional
US oil and gas is mostly from fracked production aka "unconventional." Look at how the IEA estimates methane emissions for unconventional vs. conventional.
For oil production they estimate methane venting is twice as high. For gas its higher, just not twice as high.

The โToxic Cocktailโ Brewing in Pennsylvaniaโs Waterways - Inside Climate News
Pennsylvania is still cleaning up decadesโ worth of coal mining pollution. Now it must also contend with millions of tons of fracking waste, some of it radioactive.
Fracking waste has a mix of chemicals from fracking fluid + others leached from underground.
Arsenic, lead, cancer-causing benzenes, radioactive radium can all be present.
It's being dumped in Pennsylvania landfills.
Mounting evidence says it's getting into rivers:

There is some aspect of that. But see how you can draw a level line from the 2025 peak to the 2026 peak? That is flatlined.
And how you can't do that for any previous years?
Shale oil has peaked and is headed down.

Trump and Wright are in charge. Why is fracked oil production going down?
Because they are running out of it.
