The distance between where I stand and their mental worlds allows me to observe the world from a rather secure vantage point. But am I truly safe here, or does my difficulty in communicating with those who resemble me merely deepen an illusion of security around me?
Each time I encounter deeply unsettling and, in fact, groundless opinions, I gain a clearer sense of what minds that avoid reading and research are like.
Another thing that amazes me is how some people have managed to live without ever even hearing the name of a modern, successful writer. How did you manage to escape and hide from them? That book, that story-whatever it was-could have found you no matter which wall you were hiding behind.
I tend to assume that intelligence and wealth must be linked to cognitive agility, yet I keep being proven wrong. There appears to be no connection at all between that kind of mental agility and the kind of dexterity with which a stack of banknotes can be folded and slipped into a pocket.
I have always been astonished by how people who lack knowledge -who even avoid it, fear it, and deliberately keep their distance from it- can still make money, and how money somehow seems to find them on its own.
