Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni
Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni was formally described and named 100 years ago, in 1925, based on two partial specimens found in the stomach of a sperm whale near the South Shetland Islands. However, no one has ever captured footage of a living colossal squid β until now.
π¦ This baby is COLOSSAL! π¦
First confirmed live observation of the colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, in its natural habitat. Filmed at about 600m near the South Sandwich Islands during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition. youtu.be/lzPoG9H8Hlo

Today I know I need to post some more cool deep-sea science but am feeling very resistant today. The best I can do is combine the two. A thread.
A picture of the earth showing the pacific ocean. You can see hawaii and New Zealand. Also the edge of antarctica, australia, and north and south america...but barely.
Itβs interesting that the emojis show the earth from three angles π π π but not the fourth.
Though π΅ is a fair approximation of what it would look like.
People underestimate the Pacific.
