But this place and others like it have become a way to self-injure mentally for so many people and every time I come here, I slip into doing it too. I can’t change anything that’s happening but I can choose not to hurt myself over and over.

I realize that removing myself as a source of little jokes and pretty pictures means that the internet gets a little bit bleaker and blander in a tiny increment and that as more people like me make the same decisions, little points of light go out all over.
I quit Facebook years ago, I don’t post to Instagram since my work will just train AI, and I am using any form of social media less and less. I am gradually disappearing from online spaces. It’s lonely but it feels better than pouring despair straight into my veins constantly.
Every time I open this app, most of what people post makes me want to cry. I agree with 99% of it but I also don’t enjoy 99% of it and I am tired of causing myself pain. So I visit less and less, and I mostly stay quiet because making little quips and being joyful about anything feels inappropriate
those people in the gifs are actually trapped in those endless loops of torment for their punishment and ours
Yeah you HAVE to, now that you know your OC was playing last season.
Don't be fooled! This is NOT a venomous snake.
It just looks like one.
You're looking at a Giant Dead Leaf Mantis (Deroplatys desiccata), native to Malaysia, Philippines & Borneo.
These little guys are masters of disguise. This is their "scary sharp-toothed predator" trick, but they have MORE!
We can’t get a copy of the original long-form birth certificate unless we petition the Superior Court and show a reason why it is imperative for it to be unsealed in the state that I was adopted in. You can get a certified copy of the amended second birth certificate though.
I can foresee that adoptees who have weird-looking amended birth certificates, like I do, are going to have problems with authorities not accepting them as legal documents. #adoptees
Hey other adoptees who, like me, have an amended birth certificate that’s a photo of microfiche with blanks and mistakes from the amendment: we should all order new birth certificates now. They’ll come on official docs that DHS/TSA will be able to recognize as a birth certificate.
He’s built like Phil Ellis. I have been watching Taskmaster too much but seriously, look at Phil Ellis. youtube.com/playlist?lis...
When I was 23, I saw a bunch of really cute velvet furniture on the side of the road, totally nice. Took it in and a year later a friend’s new gf came to my house and it turns out I’d stolen her entire living room while she was moving.
I’m very reassured that my lab tech apparently enjoys dmt
This is the poster above my head in the blood draw room at the hospital
Screenshot of an advertisement for a so-called learning app. It says “have you tried the ornithology game everyone talking about” which is notably terrible grammar. Under the words are hideous AI generated drawings supposedly of common North American bird species but they look nothing like the real species for half those shown.
Getting advertisements from the “learning app” Nibble, which is apparently made to guarantee you have no idea what a Red-tailed Hawk, Cedar Waxwing, Great Blue Heron, or Downy Woodpecker looks like in real life 🙄
Also, identifying birds is not ornithology (signed, an ornithologist and a birder)
Tell me we should trust AI to give us the facts. Tell me it's a future we can put our faith in. Come at me. I'm right here, waiting.
Whenever I look at an elephant skull, I realize that the images we come up with for dinosaurs are probably wrong. Nobody looking at an elephant skull would guess about that trunk existing unless you’re already familiar with elephants.
It’s the way we farm. It’s chicken, yes, but the water for irrigation is often polluted with livestock runoff. You can’t wash the E. Coli INSIDE a lettuce leaf away, no matter how much you wash the outside of it. Processed foods are also risky- my husband almost died of Listeria in liverwurst.

Screenshot of interactive look-up tool map where you can see the vaccination rates of individual schools as well as county and statewide rates
You can also use the map in the story to look up vaccination rates in your local schools! This was a HUGE data lift: we reviewed and mapped tens of thousands of individual schools’ data, assembling the most comprehensive public database. And we published this data here: github.com/washingtonpo...

I can only blame “screwing around with my phone while coming out of anesthesia” and you weren’t the only casualty. I don’t even know what I was trying to do anymore. I should not be handed my phone in the hospital.
I wondered why I wasn’t hearing about squids for a couple weeks there. Fixed now and hi!
Nope that was an accident, you’re not supposed to be blocked.
Snowy Sheathbill, bathing in meltwater
Crabeater Seal on an ice floe. Members of USAP in a zodiac in the distance.
Adelie Penguin colony
It was pretty amazing. The sheathbills were frequently absolutely filthy though.
