I’m still trying to take it all in!  The election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV was an extraordinary and delightful surprise.  I was one of the many commentators who said that the choice of an American as Pope was an impossibility (or at least extreme improbability).  I took my cue from the late Cardinal George who said that there would never be an American Pope until our country went into political decline.

But the Cardinal electors obviously felt otherwise. I am very intrigued by the new Pope’s choice of regnal name.  Leo XIII has long been one of my papal heroes.  He not only inaugurated the modern social teaching tradition of the Church, but he also gave rise to the revival of Thomistic thought as a means of creative engagement with the contemporary world.  There is actually much in Leo’s teaching that would appeal to both liberals and conservatives today, and this might signal how this new Leo will function as a bridge.

And he’s a Chicagoan!  Ad multos annos, Pope Leo.

Professor / Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of History of Technology and Professor / Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Philosophy of Science

@ethzurich.bsky.social is hiring two professors: one in history of technology, and one in philosophy of science. Spread the word. ETH is an amazing place, especially for scholars looking to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with STEM researchers.

Agree! I‘d also find it great to celebrate a lawyer for using scientific evidence to argue a case. But it seems she is celebrated solely for winning and hence, leading to more ambitious climate policy.

The climate-crusading lawyer who sued Switzerland over global warming — and won Cordelia Bähr is part of Nature’s 10, a list of people who shaped science in 2024.

This is bad IMO: Designating a lawyer who won a climate lawsuit one of the people who shaped *science* in 2024 implies that climate science and climate policy are essentially two activities that pursue the same goal with different methods. @natureportfolio.bsky.social

People who disagree with certain climate policies will be more inclined to be skeptical of climate science, too, if climate science is seen as a tool for climate policy. (See for example this booklet by Austrian sociologist Alexander Bogner: www.reclam.de/detail/978-3...)

But this is not a problem for science or science policy. By blurring these lines, Nature implies that science pursues the same goals as policy with different measures. When this is the view we take, we potentially contribute to science skepticism:

With this, the article totally blurs the line between climate policy and climate research. That's analytically wrong and politically unhelpful. Yes, Trump will take measures against US climate mitigation, and this will have consequences for international climate ambitions, too.

11.11.2024 10:37 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0

The piece starts by stating that the Trump presidency will have potential impacts on scientists and science policy. When discussing climate, the focus is on the Inflation Reduction Act, fossil fuel extraction, automobiles, and regulation for power plants. But these are *not* scientific issues.

I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.
