I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.

Like, yes, it sucks that tech hasn't unionized, it sucks even more that the $$ made a lot of folks into zombies spouting the nonsense of capitalist inhumanity.

I was explaining to my therapist today that in most cases the financial incentives for many folks working in tech have been enough to keep them from unionizing, and I think that has trickled down to them using the language of inevitability for so many of these things that tech rolls out.

When I joined as the head engineer of the Torment Nexus project, it was to work on fascinating technical problems and make the world a better place along the way. I am appalled to discover that the Torment Nexus would be used this way and, now that my options have vested, will be leaving the project

usually if you ask experts why an empire fell they’ll say it’s nuanced and multifaceted, so i think it’s kind of cool that with America future historians will get to just say like β€œoh they took the idiot train to moronsville”

Thousands of Iranians gathered for a mass funeral of students and staff of an elementary girls’ school in #Minab, who were killed in a strike by the US and Israel.

The death toll has crossed over 160, in what was the deadliest incident in the conflict so far.

The regime won’t let you have clean hands if you work for them, even if they’re punishing you. This was leaked on purpose, is uncomfortably close to confessing to a war crime, and highlights once again how tech’s unthinking growth directly leads to dead kids.

Part of our work is to create a political environment where folks who do find ways to act heroically receive public recognition and support.

The more we do that, the more likely it is we see at least a few military personnel taking risks to oppose the horrors and refuse illegal orders.

In describing how he felt after her, he was told in the hospital that he couldn’t eat he said this:

β€œ"I was so sad," he said. "I love to eat." When he was discharged, he went straight to Redhot Ranch for the cheeseburger he'd been craving. "I just experienced some trauma. I wanted this cheeseburger," he said.”

I love this little kreplach.

Also, it might seem like 70k is a lot of money, because it is. But that money will very quickly be eaten up by an ER Bill. Keep it little kreplach and maybe don’t close down the gofundme till you get a sense of the bill.

I am loathe to support any war, and I think nation states are mostly awful. But even if I were the most rah-rah, go-USA, pro-military strategist I would know this is a glaringly awful move, and it will surely blow back to the US as the years after the Revolution did.

That the current administration thinks they can just run a playbook for regime change from the 1940s and 50s and get a different result is both mind blowingly stupid and unsurprising.

That the strikes today also were reportedly on leftist, dissident, pro-democracy targets strikes me as telling - the US government's plan is to do the same goddamn thing over again. Not to deliver true freedom to the Iranian people.

It's okay to not know the history in immense detail, but a brief primer on Iran: the US led efforts to install the Shah in Iran after they democratically elected a prime minister (Mossadegh) who moved to nationalize their oil reserves. The Shah's reign directly led to the Iranian revolution.

I know that I spent a good portion of my graduate school years hanging out with expat Iranian musicians in LA, so I probably know a little more about Iranian and Persian history than most, but.... The lack of historical awareness of regime change by the US in Iran is staggering right now.

Iranians Who Seized U.S. Embassy Release 4 Women and 6 Black Men (Published 1979)

In 1979 when Iranian students seized the US embassy they eventually let go all of the Black people working there because they understood that the US would only care about white Americans. Iran understands our society far better than we understand theirs or our own.
