It's always interesting, when people talk about SXSW, to figure out which one they actually miss! (Also true of Austin.)

There are some bands in @chrisdeville.bsky.social's book that are just demographically not my thing, but this sure is! (Not pictured: Ron House) suchgreatheights.substack.com/p/the-times-...
If the show takes place in St. Louis or Milwaukee, it falls under Midwest Excellence's coverage area. I don't make the rules.
OK technically I do, I'm the only one here. Never mind.

I interviewed Harry Crews when "Body" came out, will have to dig that up. I was just out of college, asked exactly one question, and then he just said what he wanted to say for 40 minutes. stereogum.com/2491841/mj-l...

I did not wait two days to run this column on 311 Day because I am a serious person.
I think the extent to which R.E.M. has embraced the whole thing is probably the biggest driver of their growing draw, even if Athens/NY/Portland the only places that get cameos. They have just as many original members as Foreigner!
What will Creem dream up next, a free Titty Bingo sticker in every issue?
if memory serves SXSW itself made those shirts at some point. But yes I had the same thought!
I mean, we've all been in the Minus Five or close to it!
Sure. But I still see it as intepretation, not "cover band" (both musically and given Shannnon is an actor but not an impersonator). And Wurster was actually in the Minus Five with Buck!
I see it as being akin to Jennifer Warnes' Leonard Cohen album. Or a jazz or bluegrass combo doing nothing but Coltrane or Monroe. And for sure sure the star power of the players is what's filling the bigger rooms.

Oh dang, a new Walkabouts overview! And what a smart way to showcase the songs. The Walkabouts are deeply important to me so I do encourage taking the plunge -- and if you'd like a more extensive overview from me in turn, my Shfl guide from the other year: theshfl.com/guide/The-Wa...
